Second-half rally falls just short for UNC Pembroke

Braves quarterback throws two TD passes, rushes for a score.

UNC Pembroke scored 26 points in the second half but it wasn’t quite enough as the Braves fell to visiting Charleston (WV) 37-29 in a Saturday afternoon Mountain East Conference contest.

UNCP trailed 24-3 in the third quarter when the offense finally started clicking and finding the end zone.

Colin Johnson threw a pair of touchdown passes for the Braves – a 23-yarder to EJ Gatling and a 26-yarder to Malik Tobias. Johnson also rushed for a score and converted a two-point conversion. JaQuan Kelly scored on a 4-yard run.

Javonte Howard completed 15 passes for 197 yards and three scores for Charleston (2-1). Two Charleston rushes eclipsed the 100-yard mark – Chavon Wright 142 yards and Alex Brink 120 yards, 1 touchdown.

Johnson had a big day for the Braves in the losing effort, rushing for 114 yards to go with 230 yards through the air. Sean Hill paced the UNCP defense with 13 tackles. Jamae Blank had two sacks.

UNC Pembroke has lost the last two games after opening the season with a win in the Two Rivers Classic over Fayetteville State.
