Division 3 Football Scores: Brevard wins again; NC Wesleyan wins for first time

Tornados get four TD passes from Ethan Beamish to improve to 3-0 in USA South

Brevard got its third win in a row, and NC Wesleyan earned its first victory of the season. Those two results highlight Division III football action in the Old North State on Saturday. Here’s a recap:

Brevard 49, Southern Virginia 28

Ethan Beamish threw four touchdown passes and Chancellor Lee-Parker rushed for 122 yards and two scores. The Tornados earned their third win of the season and improved to 3-0 in the USA South Conference. Southern Virginia dropped to 1-5, 1-2.

Reggie Taylor II caught two of Beamish’s TD throws on plays covering 75 and 25 yards. Zackary Orr (25 yards) and Adam Douglas (27 yards) caught the other scoring throws. Beamish finished with an even 300 yards passing.

DJ Taylor capped the Tornados scoring with a 41-yard TD run in the final minutes.

Trey Williams had a couple of sacks for Brevard. Robert Dorsey forced two fumbles, had 1.5 tackles-for-loss and five total tackles. Hugo Taylor missed a field goal but hit all seven of his PAT attempts.

NC Wesleyan 35, LaGrange 14

The Battling Bishops rolled up 364 yards on the ground and found the win column for the first time in 2023. Anthony Byrd led the way with 203 yards and two touchdowns. Myles Martin added another 85 yards and two scores.

Byrd also caught three passes for 50 yards. Ephraim Askew threw for 152 yards and completed one touchdown to Javarion Smith. Braxtyn Green hit all five of his PATs.

Maryville 35, Greensboro 7

The Pride had a tough time moving the ball on the ground and suffered their sixth defeat of the season. Maryville improved to 4-1, 1-1 in the USA South Conference.

Greensboro avoided the shutout when Alec Williams-Carr found Leonard Greer on a 30-yard touchdown pass in the fourth quarter. Williams-Carr completed 22 passes for 235 yards. Greer finished with seven receptions for 119 yards.

Larry Jones flew around the field for the Greensboro defense, recording a team-high 13 tackles. Max Steele added nine stops. Jaden James and Derrick Smith picked off Maryville passes.

“We faced a strong opponent today, but our players showed heart and determination. We’ll learn from this experience and come back stronger,” Pride coach Tyler Card said.

Washington & Lee 48, Guilford 25

The Quakers led 10-6 after a 75-yard touchdown pass from Bailey Baker to JuJu Rice midway through the first quarter. But Washington & Lee scored the next 28 points to pull away.

Guilford dropped to 2-3 on the season, 0-2 in Old Dominion Athletic Conference play. Washington & Lee improved to 4-1, 2-0.

Bailey Baker had a prolific day for the Quakers, throwing for 352 yards and three touchdowns. Messiah Ramseur and Paker DeHart had the other TD receptions. Shane Shapiro made six grabs for 105 yards. Burke Nettles hit a 43-yard field goal.

Adam Lacy made 11 solo tackles and assisted on seven others for Guilford.
