Elon and Campbell produced a great game this past weekend in the schools’ first battle as conference mates. The Phoenix jumped out to a 21-3 lead then hung on for a 28-24 triumph.

The contest also produced two of the CAA’s Players of the Week.

Elon’s Jalen Hampton picked up Offensive Player of the Week honors following his 169-yard, four-touchdown performance. Campbell’s VJ Wilkins earned CAA Rookie of the Week honors for the second time this season, catching 10 passes Saturday for 113 yards and a touchdown.

For Hampton, it was his second consecutive game with at least 150 rushing yards. He also tied the program’s FCS record for rushing touchdowns in a game, a mark that had not been touched since AJ Harris did the same in 2010. Three of those touchdowns came in the second quarter as Elon rebounded from a 3-0 deficit to lead 21-3 at the half.

Following a third quarter Campbell touchdown to get within 11 points, Elon marched back down the field and scored on Hampton’s fourth TD to give the Phoenix a 28-10 lead. Campbell rallied late with a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns, but it was not enough.

With the 169 yards, Hampton surpassed 1,500 career rushing yards in just his 15th career game. He now ranks eighth in the program’s FCS history with 1,541 career rushing yards.

Hampton, a redshirt sophomore from Frederick, MD., leads the CAA with 488 rushing yards in 2023, an average of 122.0 per game. He ranks seventh nationally in both categories. He is also eighth in the country with five rushing touchdowns and 18th nationally in all-purpose yards at 129.5 per contest.

A redshirt freshman wide receiver, Wilkins caught five of his 10 passes in the fourth quarter of Campbell’s near comeback, totaling 64 yards in the final stanza alone, including an 11 TD grab, his third score in four games.

For the season, Wilkins leads the Camels in receiving yards at 272, catches with 24, receiving TDs at three, as well as kickoff return yards with 226.

This is the third time in four games that a Camel has taken home CAA weekly honors. Wilkins, from Pfafftown (Reagan HS), was also named the league’s top freshman performer following Campbell’s week two win at The Citadel.
