March Madness still lingers across North Carolina — thanks to NC State’s magical basketball runs to the Final Four — but the time for spring football games and scrimmages has arrived.

The first round of games will be this weekend, and most of state’s FBS, FCS, Division II and NAIA programs will participate in some type of public game or scrimmage through April 20.

Catawba will kick things off Friday, April 5 with a spring scrimmage against visiting Winston-Salem State. The scrimmage starts at 7 p.m. at Shuford Stadium. Division II teams are permitted this season to scrimmage other schools and may also have their own spring intrasquad game as well.

Two more D2 scrimmages will follow on Saturday afternoon: Johnson C. Smith at Wingate (1 p.m.) and Shaw vs. St. Andrews from the NAIA ranks (1 p.m. at Clayton High School).

In what is already shaping up to be one of the biggest weekends in NC State history, the Wolfpack football team will play its annual spring game at 2 p.m. Saturday at Carter-Finley Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ACC Network and on the radio via the Wolfpack Sports Network. (The men’s basketball contest against Purdue is schedule to tip at 6:09 p.m.)
