A workhorse running back who is already Barton football’s career rushing leader has been named NC Football News’ Best In State preseason most valuable offensive player for Division II.

Junior Jordan Terrell has been with the Bulldogs since the school resurrected its football program in 2020 after a 70-year hiatus. Over two full seasons and the shortened COVID campaign in 2020, he’s setting school rushing records that may stand for years and decades to come.

Terrell, from Ramseur, N.C., already has 3,755 career yards and 33 touchdowns on 701 carries — an average of 5.4 yards per tote.

He finished with 1,632 yards and 15 touchdowns last season and ranked fourth in rushing yards per game (148.4) in Division II — good enough to be named honorable mention Don Hansen All-American and second team NCAA Division II Super Region Two.

“Terrell is the rare workhorse and game-breaker combination, toting the ball over 300 times in each of the past two seasons, while posting touchdowns runs of over 80 yards in each season, as well,” wrote Ron Balaskovitz in a feature story on South Atlantic Conference standouts for FloFootball.com. “There is not a more dangerous back in the league than Terrell, and the fact that he still has potentially two more seasons to add to his legacy, could see him finish his career as one of the greatest backs in Bulldog and SAC history.”

Terrell, who played his high school football at Eastern Randolph, showed his durability last year, piling up 752 yards in the final three games of the season.

The Bulldogs will showcase Terrell for the first time in 2023 this Thursday. Barton will host Chowan in the opener for both schools. Kickoff is 6 p.m.

Terrell rushed for 178 yards and a score in the Bulldogs’ 17-3 win a year ago.
