St. Andrews senior linebacker John Brown set a new Appalachian Athletic Conference record for tackles-for-loss in Saturday’s game against Point University, the league announced this week.

Brown finished the game with five stops behind the line-of-scrimmage, for a total of 10 yards in losses — the new standard in the NAIA conference. He quickly had company in the AAC record books, as Point’s Cortez Thomas also recorded five TFLs in the Skyhawks’ 40-12 win in Laurinburg.

Brown (6-1, 225) is a senior from Aberdeen. He played high school football at Calvary Christian School, where he was the program’s all-time leading tackler. Through St. Andrews’ first five games, he has 8.5 tackles for loss, 4.5 sacks, 27 total tackles and two forced fumbles. He’s third on the team in tackles and the team leader in TFLs and sacks.

Campbell LB Jalen Brooks Hits Single-Best For NC

We track single-game tackling leaders for our state, and Campbell’s Jalen Brooks set a new standard for the 2024 season. The transfer from UNC had nine solo stops and 10 assists (19 total tackles) in the Camels’ 35-28 loss at William & Mary. He got into the backfield for three-tackles-for-loss and recorded one sack.

It was, by far, Brooks’ best statistical showing this season. His previous season high had been 12 tackles at Western Carolina. Brooks (5-11, 230), from Knightdale (Cardinal Gibbons HS), has 67 tackles on the season.

The previous best for most tackles in game was 17, earned by Lavarius Heath of St. Andrews in Week 3. Heath still leads the state in solo stops with 12.

Three Old North State defenders notched 15 tackles in games this past weekend: Johnson C. Smith’s Benari Black and Barton’s Ja’Correy Bible and Dereck Barringer.
