Former Bunn High offensive line standout Ty Howle has earned a national coaching honor for his role in leading Penn State to the College Football Playoff semifinals.

Howle was voted the 2024 FootballScoop Tight Ends Coach of the Year. FootballScoop.com noted Howle’s efforts in developing multiple NFL tight ends as well as mentoring this year’s Mackey Award winner, Tyler Warren, now one of the most decorated tight ends in school history [Read the full story HERE].

Howle has been on the coaching staff at Penn State since 2020. He currently serves as tight ends coach and co-offensive coordinator. The Nittany Lions (13-2) beat Boise State on New Year’s Eve and will face Notre Dame next Thursday with a berth in the national title game on the line.

Warren has more than 1,000 yards in receptions this season and received some buzz as a Heisman Trophy long shot.

“There’s no school in the country, there’s no program in the country that is doing what we are doing with tight ends right now and really over the last 10 years,” Penn State coach James Franklin said in November. “Ty Howle has come into that position as a Penn State letterman, and I think has taken it to a whole other level. We’re recruiting the best tight ends in the country; we’re developing the best tight ends in the country.”

Howle starred at Bunn High School in the mid-2000s. The Wildcats were then led by his father, David Howle, one of the most successful coaches in Franklin County history (he retired in 2016).

Ty Howle was a four-year letter winner at Penn State from 2009-13. He served as a graduate assistant coach at NC State from 2014-15, coached the offensive line at Western Illinois in 2016-17 and became co-offensive coordinator for WIU in 2018-19.

He joined Penn State’s staff as an analyst before being promoted to tight ends coach and later taking on co-offensive coordinator duties in 2022.
