Fabulous 14 Offense: Catawba WR Bo Pryor leads statewide receiving corps

Check inside for statewide leaders in passing, rushing and receiving after Week 4 games.

Four games into the 2023 campaign, Catawba’s Bo Pryor has already surpassed his single-season high in receiving yards and has more touchdown catches than in his first three years combined.

The redshirt junior from Cherryville (Burns HS) also leads our Best In State Fabulous 14 wide receiver crops this week in four different categories.

Pryor is tops in North Carolina — across all divisions — in receiving yards (451), total catches (30), yards-per-game (112.8) and touchdowns (7). No one is really close to him in any of these categories.

Pryor is a big reason Division II Catawba, a one-win team a year ago, has made a leap forward in the competitive South Atlantic Conference. The Indians are 2-2 thus far. Pryor ranks second in all of Division II in receiving yards.

RJ Mobley of Winston-Salem State and Kameron Johnson of Barton, also D2 players, have the next highest total in receiving yards, at 334 and 333 respectively. Brevin Caldwell of D2 Johnson C. Smith has 26 catches, while Keyshaun Pete of D3 Methodist has 25.

Catawba teammate Jordan Mitchell is tied for second in receiving touchdowns with four. Western Carolina’s Censere Lee and Livingstone’s Matthew Henry also have four TD catches.

Fabulous 14 Quarterbacks

Pryor and Mitchell have been catching passes from one of our Fabulous 14 quarterbacks, Preston Brown, all season. Brown leads our statewide passing stats across all divisions in total yards (1,217) and passing touchdowns (14). He’s fifth nationally in Division II in passing yards and tied for fifth in touchdowns.

North Carolina’s Drake Maye is second on our Best In State passing list with 1,187 yards, though the preseason ACC Player of the Year has thrown just five touchdowns thus far (against four interceptions).

Campbell’s Hajj-Malik Williams, Methodist’s Brandon Bullins and Brevard’s Ethan Beamish round out the top five passing-yards leaders for this week. Williams ranks fourth in FCS passing yardage.

Western Carolina’s Cole Gonzales, the reigning Southern Conference offensive player of the week, has 10 touchdown throws on the season — five of them coming this past weekend in the first half against Charleston Southern. Appalachian State’s Joey Aguilar and Wake Forest’s Mitch Griffis have nine passing TDs each.

Fabulous 14: Running Backs

Heading into Saturday, Barton College’s Jordan Terrell led the entire NCAA in total rushing yards and yards-per-game. Though Mars Hill held the Barton star to only 47 yards in Saturday’s SAC showdown, Terrell steal ranks second in D2 — and first in North Carolina — in total rushing yards. He now has 629 for the season, a robust average of 157.3 yards per game.

Five other rushers from the state are averaging better than 100-yards per game on the ground: Appalachian State’s Nate Noel (135.5 ypg), Mars Hill’s Jon Gullette (133.7), Catawba’s Leroy Bracey Jr. (123.0), Elon’s Jalen Hampton (122.0), Western Carolina’s Desmond Reid (117.3). Keyshaun Pete of Methodist (97.8) and Chancellor Lee-Parker of Brevard (97.5) are knocking on the door.

Hampton and Lee-Parker both earned conference offensive player awards this week.

While many of the yardage leaders hail from FCS and Division II programs, the two running backs who have found the end zone the most play in the ACC: Jordan Waters of Duke and Omarion Hampton of North Carolina, who each have recorded seven rushing touchdowns. Barton quarterback Jaquan Lynch has tallied six rushing touchdowns, with Reid and Hampton each earning five.
