Appalachian State football will host 3-3 Coastal Carolina for homecoming this weekend. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. Saturday at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone.

The rivalry between these two schools is young, but there is no shortage of bad blood. The Mountaineers are 4-4 against the Chanticleers in the last eight meetings – 7-4 dating back to 2005 – but have lost the last three games.

“Excited about this week and homecoming being back at our home stadium,” head coach Dowell Loggains said in his weekly press conference.

What happened last week?

The Mountaineers remain a perfect 12-0 against Georgia State with a 41-20 win in Atlanta. Redshirt sophomore quarterback JJ Kohl followed up his stellar performance against Oregon State with 309 passing yards and four touchdowns against the Panthers.

App State Key Players

Kohl is likely to remain the starting quarterback for this week’s game. He will look to lead the Mountaineers to their first win over the Chanticleers in three years.

Freshman running back Jaquari Lewis continues to grow his role in the offense. Last week he led the team with 14 carries for 57 yards and a touchdown. There is a high chance he will see more snaps going forward alongside App State’s leading rusher Rashod Dubinion (667 yards, 3 TDs).

Redshirt senior tight end Izayah Cummings was Kohl’s favorite target last week with six receptions for 94 yards and a touchdown. This was by far his best game of the season, and he is on an upward trajectory.

Redshirt sophomore Zyeir Gamble totaled seven tackles and forced a fumble last week. This was his first time leading the team in tackles this season.

Coastal Carolina Key Players

Coastal Carolina appears to still be searching for their starting quarterback. However, redshirt sophomore Tad Hudson has seen the most reps over the season, throwing for 447 yards with 3 touchdowns and 3 interceptions.

Junior running back Ja’Vin Simpkins has 52 carries for 295 yards and 2 touchdowns on the season. He will likely be the starting running back this weekend. Sixth-year senior linebacker Shane Bruce leads the defense with 36 tackles and 2 interceptions. The Mountaineers will have to look out for him.
