UPDATED: March 13, 2026 — The Sun Belt Conference released its full 2026 football schedule Friday afternoon, giving Appalachian State its complete 12-game slate for the upcoming season.
The Mountaineers will open the year with four September non-conference games against Maine, East Carolina, Charlotte and NC State before beginning Sun Belt play in October.
Despite the schedule release, uncertainty surrounding Louisiana Tech’s attempt to leave Conference USA and join the Sun Belt remains unresolved. Both the Sun Belt and Conference USA currently list Louisiana Tech in their 2026 football schedules, creating one of the more unusual scheduling situations in recent conference realignment history. Conference USA did an unexpected schedule release Thursday night.
For now, the Sun Belt schedule proceeds as if Louisiana Tech will join the league for the 2026 season, though a court hearing scheduled for March 19 could still affect the Bulldogs’ status.
App State’s Full 2026 Football Schedule Unveiled
The Mountaineers will play five Saturday home games and one Thursday night home game this season. Charlotte comes up the mountain, while the App State will travel to both ECU and NC State.
One of the most notable stretches of the schedule comes in October, when App State plays three games in a 12-day span, including a nationally televised Thursday night matchup against James Madison. That comes on the heels of a Friday night game at Coastal Carolina.
Appalachian State’s two cross-divisional opponents are Louisiana-Monroe and South Alabama. Louisiana Tech is not on the Mountaineers’ 2026 slate.

Key Takeaways From App State’s 2026 Schedule
- The Mountaineers won’t leave the state of North Carolina until its mid-October trip to Coastal and won’t venture out of the Carolinas until a Halloween date at Georgia Southern.
- The schedule alternates home and away games all season.
- App State will face all six traditional East Division rivals again this season, getting ODU, JMU and Georgia State at home. Games against Coastal Carolina, Georgia Southern and Marshall are away.
- ASU plays only two non-Saturday games, and both should get national coverage on an ESPN platform in mid-October.
- The two Sun Belt West teams on the schedule — ULM (3-9, 1-7 conference) and South Alabama (4-8, 3-5) finished at the bottom of the division a year ago.
Appalachian State is coming off a 5-8 season, 2-6 in the league. The Mountaineers squeezed into the Birmingham Bowl with only five wins when other schools opted out of the post-season, but they lost to long-time rival Georgia Southern for the second time in a December clash.

Appalachian State’s spring game will be held Saturday, April 18 at Kidd Brewer Stadium.
Sun Belt schedule delayed by nearly two weeks
The Sun Belt usually drops its football schedule around the first of March. But the delay in this year’s release has been tied to uncertainty surrounding Louisiana Tech’s attempt to leave Conference USA and join the Sun Belt for the 2026 season.
Conference USA maintains the Bulldogs must remain in the league until 2027 under conference bylaws requiring 14 months’ notice before departure.
When rumors began circulating Thursday that the Sun Belt intended to release a full schedule the following day — with Louisiana Tech included as a league member — Conference USA countered by unveiling its own schedule that night. Most of its own schools weren’t ready for the release, but the Conference USA schedule grid listed a full set of conference games for Louisiana Tech, including three Wednesday night games in October.
Humorous memes aside about Louisiana Tech playing two full conference schedules in 2026, something will have to give between now and the season starting. Louisiana Tech’s own schedule release on Friday included the Sun Belt games, not Conference USA.

Why Louisiana Tech Held Up the Sun Belt Schedule
Louisiana Tech announced last year it would join the Sun Belt no later than July 1, 2027, but the school has since tried to accelerate the move and begin Sun Belt competition in the 2026 football season.
Conference USA has pushed back, citing league bylaws that require 14 months’ notice before a school can depart. Because Louisiana Tech did not meet that timeline, the conference maintains the Bulldogs must remain in CUSA for the 2026 season unless a financial settlement is reached.

Louisiana Tech has responded by filing a lawsuit in Louisiana state court in an attempt to force an earlier exit.
For Sun Belt schools such as Appalachian State, the dispute mattered because it affected the league’s scheduling format. If Louisiana Tech is not able to join in 2026, the Sun Belt would have 15 football members, forcing the conference to adjust divisional matchups and cross-division games.
A hearing in the case is scheduled for March 19, meaning the situation could remain unresolved until then or even after.
NC Football News will continue monitoring the Louisiana Tech legal situation as it pertains to App State’s football schedule.
