Georgia prep quarterback Ben Musser became the first known commitment of Appalachian State’s 2027 high school recruiting class.
Musser, who pledged to the Mountaineers on Feb. 9, is listed as a three-star prospect and is ranked as a top-35 quarterback nationally by both 247Sports and Rivals.
Musser, who is from Bogart, GA, initially committed to Virginia Tech last summer. He decommitted from the Hokies in September after the school fired coach Brent Fry. He has been offered by 18 FBS programs, including from Nebraska, Cincinnati, Purdue and Vanderbilt.
Yahoo Sports called Musser’s commitment to App State a “major recruiting victory for head coach Dowell Loggains” coming off his already strong 2026 class, which was ranked among the best in the Group of 5.
Ben Musser At a Glance
Musser has a solid build at 6-2, 205 pounds. He completed 68 percent of his throws in 2025 for Prince Avenue Christian, finishing with 2,042 yards through the air and 25 touchdowns. He also rushed for nine touchdowns and 540 yards.
Per Rivals, Musser has amassed more than 4,800 total yards and has accounted for 57 TDs the past two seasons. Prince Avenue Christian plays in the Georgia private schools division.
“The biggest thing with Ben Musser is that he’s a very good athlete,” Charles Power, Rivals director of scouting, said in a recent story. “He’s a dual-threat guy and definitely a guy that I think can move up in the rankings … He’s a guy who, if he gets in the right system, could be a very good college player.”
Loggains and Appalachian State have been involved in Musser’s recruiting since at least spring 2025. The Mountaineers, per 247Sports, offered Musser in April 2025 – the same weekend he was on an unofficial visit to the school.
Why This Commitment Matters for App State
The Mountaineers saw all three quarterbacks who started games in 2025 jump into the transfer portal after the season, prompting a significant reset at the position. Loggains brought in three transfers for 2026 – Malachi Singleton (Purdue/Arkansas), Henry Hasselbeck (UCLA) and Tommy Ulatowski (Kent State/Kennesaw State). He also signed Tennessee prep quarterback Bronzden Chaffin, a physical dual-threat QB, as part of the 2026 high school class.
Musser represents the first long-term high school building block of the 2027 cycle and adds another true dual-threat option to the quarterback pipeline, reinforcing Loggains’ push toward a more athletic, mobile presence at the position in Boone.
