App State picked 2nd in ultra competitive Sun Belt East

Mountaineers put three on preseason all-conference team

Sun Belt football coaches believe Appalachian State will be back in the thick of the conference title chase this season.

The Mountaineers finished a close second in the East Division in the league’s preseason coaches poll, which was released Monday. James Madison edged Appalachian by just three points in the voting. Both schools received four first-place votes.

The Sun Belt East looks like a dogfight overall, with five schools — Coastal Carolina, Marshall and Georgia Southern joining James Madison and App — receiving at least one first-place vote. Only 10 points separated the top four schools.

Troy, which beat Coastal Carolina 45-26 in last year’s Sun Belt title game, has been picked to win the Sun Belt West over South Alabama. Appalachian (6-6, 3-5 Sun Belt a year ago) played in the 2021 conference championship game.

Three Mountaineers make all-Sun Belt team

The offensive line looks to be a strength for Appalachian State this season. Two members of the OL earned preseason all-conference honors as voted on by the coaches: senior Isaiah Helms (first team) and redshirt senior Damion Daley (second team).

Helms, featured HERE by NC Football News has 25 starts with the Mountaineers and was all-Sun Belt a year ago. Daley, who also earned All-Sun Belt recognition in 2022, started every game from 2021-22 at left guard.

Also making first-team preseason all-conference from ASU: kick returner Milan Tucker. The redshirt junior proved dangerous on special teams in 2022, averaging more than 28 yards per return. He had a 96-yard TD return against Marshall and long returns of 47 yards (vs. UNC) and 63 yards (vs. Georgia State).

Appalachian coach, players take stage Wednesday

Sun Belt Media Days will be held Tuesday and Wednesday in New Orleans, with Appalachian State and other East Division teams participating Wednesday. The Mountaineers’ official press conference with head coach Shawn Clark, Helms and safety Nick Ross will start at 3 p.m. ET and will air on ESPN+.
