Appalachian State Mountaineers football is one of the most accomplished programs in North Carolina, with sustained success across both the Division I-AA/FCS and FBS levels. The Mountaineers have competed in the Sun Belt Conference since moving to the FBS in 2014 and play their home games at Kidd Brewer Stadium in Boone, North Carolina.
Appalachian State rose to national prominence during its FCS era, winning three consecutive national championships from 2005 to 2007 and recording one of the most famous upsets in college football history with its 2007 victory at Michigan.
Since transitioning to the FBS, App State has remained a consistent Group of Five contender, earning multiple Sun Belt championships, frequent bowl appearances and national rankings. The program is known for its strong home-field advantage, high winning percentage and ability to compete successfully against Power Conference opponents.

Who is Appalachian State’s head football coach?
Dowell Loggains became Appalachian State’s 23rd head football coach when he was hired in December 2024. Loggains came to the Mountaineers after serving as South Carolina’s offensive coordinator in 2023-24. He was an assistant at Arkansas before that and spent 17 years in various NFL roles.
Has Appalachian State ever won a national championship in football?
App State won consecutive NCAA Division I-AA (now FCS) national championships in 2005, 2006 and 2007. The Mountaineers, coached by Jerry Moore, beat Northern Iowa 21-16 in 2005, topped UMass 28-17 in 2006 and rolled past Delaware 49-21 in 2007. The 2007 season also included the famed upset of Michigan that September.
