Brevard’s football team has played three straight home nailbiters to start the season. On Saturday, the Tornados finally won one.
Ethan Beamish completed a two-point conversion pass to Adam Douglas in the third overtime, and Brevard held on to beat visiting Maryville on homecoming 37-35.
Both teams kicked field goals in the first and second overtime periods. Brevard (1-3, 1-0 USA South) kept Maryville out of the end zone on its possession. Teams have to attempt two-point conversions after the second overtime.
Beamish threw two touchdown passes in the winning effort and finished with 264 yards on 23-of-42 attempts.
Chancellor Lee-Parker had a monster game, rushing for 179 yards and two touchdowns, averaging 7.8 yards per carry. Reggie Taylor II and Jack Spotz caught touchdown passes.
Dylan James, Quintrell Bowman and James Woods each had eight tackles for the Brevard defense. Woods also broke up four passes. Robert Dorsey accounted for 2.5 sacks, sending Maryville back 17 yards on the plays. Toby Naylor had an interception.
Maryville led for most of the first three quarters, including 16-7 and 22-14. A 75-yard Beamish to Taylor pass play eventually pulled the Tornados even at 22 (with Beamish completing a two-point pass to Adam Douglas).
A Lee-Park 46 yard touchdown run gave Brevard a 29-22 advantage early in the fourth quarter. But Maryville answered with a Bryson Rollins scoring run less than three minutes later. The game stayed tied through the rest of the period.
Hugo Taylor hit both of his field goal attempts in overtime to keep Brevard in contention. The Tornados lost their first two home games by a combined nine points.
