HAMPTON, VA. – Campbell football rolled up 440 yards of total offense and held off Hampton 30-27 on the road Saturday at Armstrong Stadium.
Campbell moved to 3-3 overall, snapping a two-game skid, also evening its CAA record at 2-2, handing the Pirates (3-2, 1-1 CAA) their first conference loss.
Chris McKay, Jr. and NaQuari Rogers combined for 187 of Campbell’s 202 rushing yards with two touchdowns. McKay ran for 97 yards on eight carries, including a 61-yard scamper, while Rogers ran for 90 yards on 29 attempts.
Rogers, who rushed for 71 yards and a touchdown on 18 first half carries, also added 52 yards receiving on three catches.
Hajj-Malik Williams completed 14-of-21 passes for 238 yards with two touchdowns, both to Ezeriah Anderson, plus an interception. Anderson’s two scores came on four catches with 45 yards, while Chaney Fitzgerald hauled in four passes for a game and career-high 107 yards.
Ed Dennis posted a pair of second half interceptions, while Cornelius Davis tallied a team-high eight tackles. Marquez Casey added seven stops, including one of Campbell’s four stops for loss, while George Wilson recorded a sack, one of his four tackles on the day.
Darran Butts paced Hampton with 124 yards rushing and a touchdown, while Elijah Burris added 113 yards and another score. Chris Zellous also rushed for 34 yards, also completing 14-of-28 passes for 147 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions.
Qwahsin Townsel led Hampton’s defense with a game-high 17 tackles.
The Camels carried a 14-7 lead into halftime after Hampton’s goal line stand turned CU over on downs inside the one-yard line.
The Pirates tied the game at the 7:21 mark of the third on Zellous’ 22 yard pass to Evan King. Three possessions later, the Camels turned Dennis’ first interception into a go-ahead score with a four-play, 29 yard drive, ending in Anderson’s second TD of the day.
A Hampton safety on its next drive added to the Campbell lead, while McKay tacked on a seven-yard TD following his 61-yard run to make it 30-14 Camels with 14:02 to play.
Hampton clawed back with a pair of fourth quarter touchdowns to bring the game within 30-27, but the ensuing on-side kick sailed out of bounds, securing the road win for the Camels.
Campbell will break with an open week seven, returning to Barker-Lane Stadium for a Homecoming matchup with Maine on October 21.
