The Charlotte 49ers have dismissed Biff Poggi as head coach of the football program with two games remaining in the 2024 season.
Director of Athletics Mike Hill made the announcement on Monday evening, two days after Charlotte suffered a 59-24 loss to South Florida at home to fall to 3-7.
Associate head coach Tim Brewster will take over as interim head coach for the 49ers’ final games against Florida Atlantic and UAB.
“I am thankful to Biff Poggi for his leadership and mentorship of our student-athletes over these past two seasons,” Hill stated in a press release. “No one can question Biff’s passion for helping young people succeed in life, both personally and professionally, but our on-field results have unfortunately fallen short of everyone’s expectations. As we move forward into the next chapter of Charlotte 49er Football, we will be looking for a leader to take our program to the next level as a consistent bowl and championship contender.”
Poggi, who was hired in 2023 after serving as an assistant at Michigan, leaves Charlotte with a 6-16 record.
Interim coach Tim Brewster has more than 30 years of coaching experience
Tim Brewster has been a collegiate head coach and NFL assistant. His career highlights include serving as head coach at Minnesota from 2007-10, where he led the Gophers to two bowl appearances, and as a tight ends coach at multiple Power Five programs. Brewster has developed 12 NFL tight ends, including Kyle Pitts, the highest-drafted tight end in NFL history.
Known for his recruiting prowess, Brewster has contributed to top-ranked classes at Florida State, North Carolina, and Texas A&M. A two-time All-Big Ten tight end at Illinois, he played a pivotal role in the Illini’s 1984 Rose Bowl team.
Hill and Brewster will address the media at the program’s weekly press conference Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. in the Judy Rose Center.
Third coaching change at a North Carolina college
Charlotte is the third program from the Old North State to release a head coach this fall. East Carolina dismissed Mike Houston last month, while Elizabeth City State relieved Marcus Hilliard of his duties after the CIAA season was complete.
