D3 Football: Guilford moves to 2-0, NC Wesleyan lights up stat sheet

Quakers top Methodist 14-12 in another defensive battle

Fourteen points proved enough again for Guilford College’s football team. The Quakers defeated Methodist 14-12 on Saturday in a battle of in-state Division III rivals.

Guilford (2-0) won its opener over Greensboro College 14-0 last Saturday.

JuJu Rice notched Guilford’s first TD, hauling in a 62-yard pass from Jaelan Brown in the opening period. Drew Winkler added the second touchdown, converting a 2-yard pass from Caleb Robles into points.

Methodist got a touchdown from Sajari Love and a pair of fourth-quarter field goals from Samuel Andrae.

In other D3 action around the state:

Averett 27, Greensboro 20

The Pride jumped to a 13-0 lead in the first half on touchdown passes from Jayden Morrison to Ja’Shawn Harris (9 yards) and Shamar Privette (67 yards). But Averett stormed back in the second half to take the win. Greensboro fell to 0-2. Averett, which beat North Carolina Wesleyan last weekend, improved to 2-0.

Morrison had three TD passes on the day, his last one a 70-yarder to Deaven Hawkins in the third quarter. That play gave Greensboro 20-12 lead but Averett notched a pair of rushing scores to pull away. Morrison finished with 255 passing yards. Privette hauled in four catches for 116 yards.

Hampden-Sydney 51, Brevard 30

Hampden-Sydney exploded for 30 points in the fourth quarter to erase a 30-21 deficit and win going away.

Chancellor Lee-Parker rushed for three short-yardage touchdowns for Brevard. James Woods returned an interception 25 yards for a score.

Brevard’s Zackary Orr became the first North Carolina college player to record 200-plus receiving yards this season. Orr had catches of 82 and 49 yards on his way to a 205-yard day. Alas, he did not find the end zone.

The 82-yard pass play from Ethan Beamish to Orr set up the Tornadoes in the red zone, leading 14-7 in the second quarter. But Brevard fumbled near the goal line a few plays later, and Hampden-Sydney responded with a touchdown drive to tie the game 14-14.

Ferrum 28, North Carolina Wesleyan 24

Chaz Hirschman and Christian Drumgoole had big nights despite the team loss. Hirschman threw for 337 yards and two touchdowns for the Battling Bishops. Both scoring strikes went to Drumgoole, who hauled in 17 receptions in all and finished with an amazing 258 receiving yards.

Anthony Byrd added another 163 rushing yards for North Carolina Wesleyan and found the end zone once.
