FAQs: Davidson College Football Information
What conference does Davidson College play in?
The Davidson Wildcats compete in the Pioneer Football League, the only non-scholarship conference in Division I college football. Davidson has been part of the league since 2001 and won conference titles in 2020 and 2021.
Who is Davidson College’s head football coach?
The Wildcats hired then 33-year-old Saj Thakkar to take over the program in December 2024. Thakkar, one of the youngest head coaches in FCS football, replaces Scott Abell, who left after seven seasons to take over at Rice.
Does Davidson have a football rival?
The Pioneer Football League stretches from coast to coast, but Davidson still has forged gridiron rivalries with teams in the league. The annual battle between Davidson and Presbyterian is known as the Carolina Border Battle (also Battle of the 1919 Cup, symbolizing the first year the two teams played each other on the gridiron).
This year’s Carolina Border Battle will be Saturday, Nov. 8 at 5 p.m. at Davidson. The Wildcats also have shared a long-distance rivalry with San Diego, with the two teams dominating the PFL title race from 2014-21.
