The first “bowl” game of the college football season will take place this Saturday in Greensboro.

The 23rd edition of the Gate City Soup Bowl will pit rivals Guilford College and Greensboro College in a special annual contest to support local charities that combat hunger. This year’s version will take place at Guilford at the Armfield Athletic Center on Appenzeller Field. Kickoff is 7 p.m.

Fans who bring three canned goods or more will receive free admission into the game. Those who have already purchased season tickets are also highly encouraged to bring canned goods to donate at the gate entrances.

Tickets will be available for purchase at the gate for $8 for general admission, cash only. College students get in for $5 while children under the age of 12 are free. All Guilford College Faculty, Staff and Students get in free with their Quaker Card.

Since 1997, students of the two colleges have competed in a canned food drive to benefit Second Harvest and Greensboro Urban Ministries with helping those in need. Additionally, teams within each school’s athletic departments compete among themselves to see which squad has the highest participation rate.

The school with the most donations receives bragging rights and the “Cup Award.” The winning team gets to keep the actual “Soup Bowl Trophy” for a year.

Guilford won an exciting Soup Bowl match-up 48-37 to start the 2022 season. The Quakers have won the last six games against the Pride and hold a 13-8 overall lead in the series.

Both Guilford (2-8 in 2022) and Greensboro (1-9) are looking to improve upon tough seasons a year ago. The Quakers were picked seventh in the ODAC preseason rankings. Greensboro was voted ninth in the USA South.
