Max Steele has been a mainstay in Greensboro College’s defense the past four seasons.
The senior all-conference linebacker will have a chance to wrap his arms around the school’s all-time tackles record when the Pride concludes its season Saturday at Huntingdon.
Steele, who played for nearby Southeast Guilford High before joining the Pride in 2021, needs just four stops to eclipse the Greensboro record.
Steele has made 370 tackles in his career, including seven in this past Saturday’s game against Maryville. Allen Stallings, the player he’s chasing, finished his Greensboro career with 373 from 2007-11.
Steele (6-0, 234) has 70 tackles so far this season as well as five tackles-for-loss, one sack, one fumble recovery and one blocked kick.
He started the season with an 11-tackle game against rival Guilford, then made nine tackles the following week against Averett. The fewest tackles he’s made in a game was six against Belhaven. He’s had seven stops four different times and eight tackles in two other games.
Steele already holds the school record for career solo tackles with 202. He had 110 total tackles and 15 tackles-for-loss in 2022. He earned 106 tackles as a freshman in 2021. Last season, Steele finished with 84 stops. Steele’s single-game best was 19 tackles at Maryville in 2021.
Stallings broke every Greensboro tackles record during his time in the program. He once made 26 stops in a game against Christopher Newport. He finished his final season with 139 tackles (75 solo stops and 64 assists).
Steele is from Julian, NC. He played three sports at Southeast Guilford, winning three region championships in wrestling. Steele spent time on the wrestling roster for Greensboro College.
Greensboro will take a 1-8 record in Saturday’s football finale. Huntingdon owns a 4-5 overall record, 4-3 against conference foes. The game kicks off at 1 p.m.
