Murphy High School coaching legend David Gentry, the winningest football coach in North Carolina history, has been named to the 2026 Hall of Fame class for the National Federation of State High School Associations.

Gentry compiled a 426-195-3 record during his coaching career in North Carolina and won nine NCHSAA Class 1A state championships while building Murphy High School into one of the state’s most successful small-school programs.

From 1983 until his retirement in 2021, Gentry guided Murphy to a 361-117-1 record, winning state titles in 1986, 1987, 1991, 1996, 2011, 2013, 2016, 2018 and 2021.

His career total of 426 victories remains the most by any football coach in North Carolina history and ranks among the top 15 nationally.

Elon roots helped launch legendary career

Before becoming one of the most respected high school coaches in the state, Gentry was a student-athlete at Elon College, where he graduated in 1970.

Gentry played football for the Phoenix and got his start in coaching while still an undergraduate, serving as an assistant for head coach Red Wilson. In that role, he coached the freshman team and handled scouting duties.

Following graduation, Gentry began his high school coaching career at Chatham High School, later returning to his alma mater Edneyville High School before taking over the program at Murphy in 1983.

Record-setting run at Murphy

Gentry’s tenure in Murphy transformed the small mountain town into one of North Carolina’s premier football programs.

Along with his nine state championships, Gentry’s teams captured 18 conference titles and made deep playoff runs year after year, compiling an 82-25 postseason record (.766).

Murphy’s football field was later named in his honor.

A career recognized across the state and nation

Gentry’s National High School Hall of Fame induction adds to a long list of honors recognizing his impact on the sport.

He has previously been inducted into the:

North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame (2025)
NCHSAA Hall of Fame (2023)
National High School Athletic Coaches Association Hall of Fame (2019)
Western North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame (2017)

“During his educational journey and career, David has touched many lives, especially in western North Carolina,” NCHSAA commissioner Que Tucker said in a release. “While honing his skills as a coach in the athletic arena, he was also a dedicated teacher and role model for his players and students.”
