Week 11 Stat Champions: Gardner-Webb, Mars Hill, UNC Pembroke Shine with Standout Performances

GWU defense dominates with 11 sacks, Mars Hill’s JR Martin excels, and UNCP leads in points scored.

Gardner-Webb defensive players celebrate a sack during their intense game against Eastern Illinois in Week 11.

The stat sheet from Gardner-Webb’s thrilling 31-28 win over Eastern Illinois on Saturday lit up like a Christmas tree.

Both teams put up plenty of performances worthy of our Week 11 North Carolina college football “Stat Champions” recap. A few highlights:

  • The Gardner-Webb defense collected 11 sacks of quarterback Pierce Holley, including four from defensive lineman Antonio O’Berry – tied for most sacks in a single game by a North Carolina collegiate player this season. The Runnin’ Bulldogs also picked off Holley once.
  • O’Berry’s sacks resulted in 40 yards (!) of losses for the Panthers.
  • The GWU defense wrangled 14 tackles-for-loss in all, for 83 negative yards.
  • On the other side of the ball, GWU quarterback Tyler Ridell threw for 337 yards – third-best in the state this week – and one touchdown.
  • Gardner-Webb kicker Jay Billingsley kicked a 54-yard field goal, a new school record and tied for longest in our state in a college game in 2024 (Stephen Rusnak of Charlotte).
  • As for Eastern Illinois QB Pierce Holley, he still managed to sling it for 458 yards (2o-of-26) and four touchdowns despite being harassed all day. His favorite target, Cooper Willman hauled in 11 passes for 291 yards and 3 TDs – both among the best statistical showings by an opposing QB-WR combo against an in-state team this season.

Gardner-Webb led 31-14 but had to sweat out the ending. The Bulldogs’ one interception, courtesy of Miles Richardson, came in the final minute with the Panthers threatening inside GWU territory. The win was the Bulldogs’ second in a row against Big South/OVC competition.

Stat highlights proved plentiful again this week across all of our divisions. St. Andrews (NAIA) had three tacklers around the ball all day against Bluefield.

Mars Hill quarterback JR Martin (D2) had another banner day throwing and running. UNC Pembroke (D2) once again put up eye-catching offensive numbers, including this week’s “high score” among NC’s collegiate teams.
