CHARLOTTE – NC State will face Tennessee in the 2024 version of the Duke’s Mayo Classic, the Charlotte Sports Foundation announced Monday, March 21.
The contest will take place Sept. 7, 2024 in Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium, home of the NFL’s Carolina Panthers. This will be the fourth meeting between the Wolfpack from the ACC and the Volunteers from the SEC. Tennessee won the last meeting 35-21 in Atlanta in 2012.
Both NC State and Tennessee have played in past versions of Charlotte’s kickoff game, with the Pack last appearing in 2017 against South Carolina.
“We are excited to participate in the 2024 Duke’s Mayo Classic,” NC State Director of Athletics Boo Corrigan said in a press release. “This is an incredible opportunity for our football program to face a great SEC opponent in our home state. The Charlotte Sports Foundation does a fantastic job, and I’m looking forward to an electric atmosphere at Bank of America Stadium.”
NC State also has non-conference games scheduled against Western Carolina and Louisiana Tech in 2024. The Pack likely will add one more non-league opponent to round out its 12-game regular season slate.
The Duke’s Mayo Classic is the early season compliment to the Duke’s Mayo Bowl played each year in December in Charlotte. NC Central and NC A&T are lined up for an appearance in the early season contest in 2027. Tennessee and West Virginia are tentatively scheduled to play in the 2028 game.
Organizers were able to put together the 2024 contest between NC State and Tennessee when a non-conference game between the Volunteers and Oklahoma was scrubbed due to Oklahoma joining the SEC next year.
“We are thrilled to host a dynamic regional match up that is within driving distance for these two passionate fan bases,” said Danny Morrison, executive director of the Charlotte Sports Foundation. “Tennessee and NC State have incredible ties to Charlotte and bringing them together to play in Bank of America Stadium is going to be an awesome experience. Games like these don’t happen without an amazing title sponsor like Duke’s Mayo and the support of the universities and our partners.”
North Carolina will face South Carolina in this year’s Duke’s Mayo Classic, on Sept. 2 in Charlotte.
NC State will kick off its ’23 season at Connecticut, also on Sept. 2.
