Key Storylines for NC A&T Football in 2026
Can the Aggies build off early 2025 successes?
The Shawn Gibbs’ era got off to a promising start, with a competitive game at Tennessee State in the opener and a conference win over Hampton in week three. The Aggies stayed close in CAA action against Maine and William & Mary, and pushed MEAC champ South Carolina State in a one-score game.
But after a comeback win over Campbell, things went south in November with four consecutive lopsided losses. Coach Gibbs added 40 new players through the portal and high school recruiting, bolstering both lines and adding size/athleticism on the defensive end.
Can the Aggies end their losing streak vs NCCU?
North Carolina A&T owns a healthy 54-38-5 edge in the all-time series against archrival North Carolina Central. But the Aggies have lost the last four meetings, and the 2024 and 2025 contests weren’t really competitive, defeats of 66-24 and 62-20.
Gibbs has brought much needed stability and a renewed emphasis on Aggies culture since his hire. But one measure will always be how A&T stacks up against NCCU. The Aggies will need to take a big step forward here in 2026.
Who will quarterback the Aggies?
The Aggies were in survival mode at quarterback during several stretches of the 2025 season, using seven QBs at different points. And each one came in handy, with No. 6 and 7 on the depth chart playing big roles in a comeback double overtime win over Hampton.
2024 starter Kevin White returned from injury and played in eight games. He’ll be a redshirt junior this fall. Jy Walls, Champ Long and Braxton Thomas, who took snaps last season, also look to be returning for 2026. The Aggies did not add another signal caller through the portal or high school ranks.
Can NC A&T get bigger, faster, stronger?
The Aggies finished dead last in the CAA in both scoring defense and total yards surrendered last season. The Aggies are hoping a renewed emphasis on increasing size and athleticism across the roster will get those numbers trending in a position direction in 2026.
