North Carolina continues to churn out elite high school football talent, and national recruiting outlets are taking notice. Entering the spring visit season, more than 40 high school prospects from our state’s Class of 2027 have been evaluated and ranked by analysts at 247Sports, Rivals and/or ESPN.
To provide a clearer picture of how those national services view in-state talent, NC Football News has launched a 2027 Consensus Rankings page that combines their evaluations into a single, regularly updated snapshot of the class.
This initial release serves as a baseline look at the class entering the spring evaluation period. NC Football News will revisit the rankings at key checkpoints throughout the recruiting calendar — including the summer, the 2026 season and up through national signing day — to track how the board evolves as players develop and recruiting accelerates.
Here’s what stands out from the first composite look at North Carolina’s 2027 class. There are 45 players in our first rankings list.
No doubt about No. 1
Cornerback Joshua Dobson tops our consensus rankings heading into spring. He’s listed No. 1 by all three major recruiting outlets and ranks among the top players nationally.
Dobson is new to football in our state, moving from South Carolina’s Catawba Ridge High and enrolling at Hough High in Cornelius for 2026. Hough is coming off an undefeated 8A state championship season, so Dobson will join an established powerhouse.
247Sports lists Dobson as the No. 2 cornerback in the 2027 class. ESPN, meanwhile, ranks him as its No. 5 overall player among rising seniors.
Dobson’s offer list includes roughly 30 Division I schools and reads like a who’s who of perennial FBS elite. On3 is reporting that he plans to visit Miami during the spring. 247Sports wrote in January that Tennessee, South Carolina, LSU and Notre Dame also appear high on his list, with schools like Auburn, Texas and Florida figuring prominently as well.
A college decision could come as early as this summer, 247Sports wrote.
Joshua Dobson ranks No. 5️⃣ overall and 5 stars in the updated SC Next Jr. 300 @JoshDobsonDB
A super-explosive corner with sticky coverage skills and a willingness to come up and tackle, Dobson has all the tools to succeed at the next level. https://t.co/QxnlGGjuNd pic.twitter.com/IZD8fcNLPr — Billy Tucker (@TheUCReport) February 18, 2026
Strength In Numbers: Program Pipelines Emerging
Providence Day School in Charlotte – the reigning NCISAA state champions – boasts five players in our consensus rankings. Defensive lineman Griff Galloway (20th) and safety Robert Geathers III (21st) lead the way, joined by athlete Caleb Cooper (T-29th), wideout Steele Fletcher (T-36th) and safety Brennan Drummond (T-43rd).
Millbrook and Rolesville each have four players in the consensus rankings. Millbrook edge rusher Rashad Streets tops the list at No. 4, with teammate Quinton Cypher (linebacker) at No. 9. Rolesville’s highest ranked players include safety Marquis Bryant (T-10th) and edge rusher Jayden Broadie (12th).
Cardinal Gibbons, Corvian Community School, Hough, Reagan, Southern Durham and West Charlotte also have multiple players in the rankings.
Big Four ACC Schools Receiving Early Pledges
Ten of the 45 players in our rankings have already committed to college programs. The highest ranked is Cardinal Gibbons cornerback Xavier Hasan, who pledged to Notre Dame back in December. Hasan is No. 3 in our list.
North Carolina’s four ACC schools have each received at least one commitment, which bodes well in the highly competitive quest for our state’s top prospects. Committed as of March 2:
- UNC: Rolesville safety Marquis Bryant (T-10th)
- Duke: Reagan edge rusher King Kalama (24th)
- NC State: Southeast Raleigh running back Christian Freeman (T-29th) and Cardinal Gibbons tight end Griffin Cockerham (31st).
- Wake Forest: Providence Day receiver Steele Fletcher (T-36th) and Oak Grove offensive lineman Charlie Reece (40th).
Notre Dame has two commits from North Carolina’s Class of 2027, Hasan and Asheville Christian long snapper Sean Kraft (T-41st). Millbrook’s Cypher has committed to Ohio State, while Rolesville running back Amir Brown (T-36th) has given a verbal commit to Nebraska.

2027 Class Leans Strong On Defense
Thirteen of the top 15 players in the consensus rankings play on the defensive side of the ball, with talent split among defensive backs (4), edge rushers (3), linebackers (3) and defensive linemen (3). In recent years, offensive players have figured more prominently at the top.
Millbrook’s Streets is the highest ranked edge rusher among a talented core. He finished with 39.5 tackles for loss, 15 sacks and 43 quarterback hurries this past season for the 8A runners-up, garnering all-state honors from HighSchoolOT. Teammate Cypher recorded an astounding 181 tackles for the Wildcats from his linebacker post, including 48 TFLs, four interceptions, three fumble recoveries and a blocked punt.
East Lincoln tight end Jaxon Dollar is the highest ranked offensive player at No. 2 overall. Dollar made 54 catches for 1,190 yards and 20 touchdowns during a prolific 2025 season.
Not a QB-Driven Cycle (Yet)
Grimsley quarterback Faizon Brandon was considered North Carolina’s top prospect during the 2026 recruiting cycle. The consensus 5-star prospect, spent time at No. 1 overall nationally in 247Sports rankings and was listed in the top 10 by Rivals and ESPN.
North Carolina’s 2027 class is currently more defined by defensive depth and multi-position athletes. That could change during spring and summer evaluation periods, and QBs could move up the board.
The top-ranked quarterback heading into spring is Hough’s Ethan Royal at 35th. Reidsville’s Tyson Broadway, also a state champion in 2025, ranks No. 41.
Making a National Splash
The most recent Rivals300 rankings dropped for the Class of 2027, and North Carolina put 11 players on that list. That is tied for seventh-most of any state in the country, trailing only Louisiana, Ohio, Florida, California, Georgia and Texas.
“That follows a 2026 class that was among the state’s best in recent memory with 13 Rivals300 players signing to play at the next level and 17 blue-chippers in the state overall,” Rivals recruiting writer Keegan Pope posted in a recent story post.
