The second tier of NCAA Division I football, the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), is rich in tradition and competitive excellence. North Carolina features seven FCS programs spread across five conferences:

- MEAC: North Carolina Central, a perennial contender
- Pioneer Football League: Davidson, competing in the only non-scholarship D1 conference
