The second tier of NCAA Division I football, the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS), is rich in tradition and competitive excellence. North Carolina features seven FCS programs spread across five conferences:

  • CAA: Campbell, NC A&T, and Elon
  • MEAC: North Carolina Central, a perennial contender
  • Pioneer Football League: Davidson, competing in the only non-scholarship D1 conference
  • Big South/OVC Football Association: Gardner-Webb
  • Southern Conference: Western Carolina

Despite the conference separation, in-state rivalries are alive and well with many of these schools, including the annual Aggie-Eagle showdown between NC A&T and NCCU, which has a century of history.
