🔥 Highlights & Takeaways

- Wake Forest gave new coach Jake Dickert his first ACC win, beating Virginia Tech 30-23. The Deacs bounced back after letting a big win over Georgia Tech slip away last week. Robby Ashford threw for 256 yards and a TD.
- A late goal-line stand preserved App State’s win over Oregon State. Myles Farmer earned the victory-saving tackle near the goal line. JJ Kohl made his first start at quarterback, rushing for a touchdown and throwing for another.
- CJ Bailey threw four touchdown passes before halftime, and NC State beat FCS neighbor Campbell by a comfortable 56-10 margin. Hollywood Smothers needed just four carries to earn 123 rushing yards.
- UNC’s starting quarterback, Gio Lopez, did not play due to injury in the Heels’ 38-10 loss to Clemson. Max Johnson completed 26-of-42 passes for 213 yards in his stead, but it was a dreadful day for the Tar Heels overall. UNC gave up a 75-yard TD on the first play, and the Kenan Stadium crowd began leaving in droves before the half as the Tigers built a 35-3 lead.
- Third-string quarterback Zach Wilcke sparked Charlotte at times in the second half at USF (14-of-18 passing, 150 yards, 2 TDs), but otherwise the 49ers were overwhelmed during their trip to Tampa. USF finished with 631 total yards and 36 first downs despite four turnovers.

✅ FBS Football Wrap-Up
Check back later this weekend for our main takeaways from today’s action across the North Carolina FBS landscape:
🏆 Biggest Win of the Day
Duke continues to flex as our state’s top FBS program. The Blue Devils got better as the hour got later on Saturday night/Sunday morning, erupting for 38 unanswered points following a sluggish start. The contest finished around 2 p.m. ET. Cal (4-2) had been surrendering just 18 points per game.
Anderson Castle and Nate Sheppard both rushed for two touchdowns. Que’Sean Brown caught six passes for 104 yards and a TD. Quarterback Darian Mensah threw for 265 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
💪 Standout Performance
Credit to Wake Forest for bouncing back from last week’s heartbreaking loss to Georgia Tech. The Deacs bagged an ACC win at Virginia Tech, traditionally a hostile place to play for opposing ACC teams. The Hokies had won two straight since firing Brent Pry, including an upset of NC State last weekend.
⚡ Biggest Upset
There was no big upset this week in our state, but UNC’s fan base is seriously upset by the state of its football program right now. Few thought the hiring of Bill Belichick would make the Heels instant ACC and playoff contenders. But few also thought the program fall this far and play this dreadful against P4 opponents. Clemson could have scored 70 or more.
The good news for the Heels: UNC hoops held its Blue-White scrimmage a few hours after football. Basketball season is almost here.
So North Carolina unceremoniously fired Mack Brown, the winningest head coach in program history, a man who had 14 straight seasons at or above .500, for this garbage produced by Bill Belichick?! https://t.co/Raa1kqNcfD — Emmanuel Acho (@EmmanuelAcho) October 4, 2025
