It’s a relatively light schedule for North Carolina’s FBS college football teams today (Saturday, Oct. 11). Only four of our FBS programs are in action, and all four will be on the road.
[UPDATE 10/11: All FBS games are final. Read below for final scores, top performers and takeaways.]
NC State travels to Notre Dame, looking to upset the Irish as three-touchdown underdogs. App State visits a Sun Belt rival that has never beaten them in football. Charlotte takes aim at the defending American champs, while Wake Forest heads to the Pacific Northwest.
ECU played Thursday night, falling to Tulane 26-19. UNC and Duke are idle.

🔥 Big Headlines Today
- NC State competes for a half but ultimate gets rolled by Notre Dame. We thought the Pack would at least cover the 3-TD spread.
- Former Charlotte QB Deshawn Purdie, now with Wake Forest, throws four TD passes with his new team. Three of them went to Chris Barnes. Deacs dump Oregon State to 0-7.
- App State improves to 12-0 all-time against Georgia State, winning comfortably in Atlanta. A 21-point third-quarter makes the game a runaway. JJ Kohl throws for 309 yards and 4 TDs in his second straight start.
- Poor Charlotte. As if losing to dreadful UNC wasn’t enough a few weeks ago (the Heels are considered the worst P4 team this season), the 49ers are listless against Army. Charlotte only manages 178 total yards, while Army rushes for 304.

✅ North Carolina FBS Wrap-Up
Check back here at the end of the day as we recap the highlights and standout performances from North Carolina FBS college football for Saturday, Oct. 11.
🏆 Biggest Win of the Day
Don’t look now but new coach Jake Dickert has Wake Forest at 4-2 at the midpoint of the season. UNC and Charlotte would take that about now. The Demon Deacs dispatched of Oregon State rather easily, and the Beavers announced Sunday they had fired their coach, Trent Bray. It’s a big win when your team puts the final nail in the coffin before deciding it needs to change direction. Dickert coached at Washington State before coming Wake Forest.
💪 Standout Performance
Two transfer quarterbacks who began the season as backups at their new schools – Deshawn Purdie (Wake Forest) and JJ Kohl (Appalachian State) had big days in road wins.
Purdue, who was at Charlotte in 2024, threw four touchdown passes and finished with 270 passing yards for Wake Forest. Kohl, who played at Iowa State in 2024, went 21-of-32 for 309 yards and four TDs in the Mountaineers’ trouncing of Georgia State.
⚡ Biggest Upset
When NC State played Notre Dame to a 7-7 deadlock late in the second quarter, we thought the Pack might earn this spot this week. Alas, the Fighting Irish got a field goal on its final drive of the half, then rolled NC State after the break.
🔥 Other Highlights & Takeaways
If it is possible to lose on an open date, UNC did that this week. Local and national media piled on as reports emerged of chaos and disorganization within the program. Partner that with the Tar Heels being the worst P4 team statistically speaking this season, and that’s not a recipe for a quiet bye week.
Penn State fired James Franklin on Sunday after the Nittany Lions lost for the third straight weekend. Do Duke fans need to worry about this? Penn State would love to snatch Curt Cignetti from Indiana, but if he says no and other big-name candidates fall through, do the Lions make a run at Duke coach Manny Diaz, Penn State’s defensive coordinator from 2021-23 before taking over in Durham. If Cignetti says yes, does Indiana look at someone like Diaz, who is 13-6 in two seasons at Duke.
