Mallard Creek won a battle of Charlotte-area heavyweights, while Grimsley rolled up another blowout win over a Greensboro-area rival. Those highlights and more headlined Week 5 of the North Carolina high school football season.
Mallard Creek, looking to win the 4A Queen City Conference this season, clipped 3A power West Charlotte 13-12 in a tense battle. The Mavericks got all their points in the first half, then held off a West Charlotte rally down the stretch. The Lions got two rushing touchdowns from Jamouri Nichols, including one with 56 seconds to go, to pull within a point but could get no closer.
Grimsley, meanwhile, kept its unbeaten record intact, handling Southeast Guilford 49-7. Mitchell Summers rushed for 154 yards and four touchdowns, while also catching one of Faizon Brandon’s two touchdown throws.
Pender and Shelby earned “high score” honors for Week 5, both breaking the 70-point barrier. Pender rolled past East Columbus 73-6, while Shelby scored a 70-0 triumph at Cherryville. East Forsyth also racked up points, enjoying a 69-21 road win at Reagan.
