Pender beats Hobbton 106-83 in record-breaking high school football game

Pender and Hobbton shattered the N.C. High School Athletic Association record for total points in a prep football game Friday night.

Pender won the shootout 106-83.

Yes, you read that final score correctly. No, it was not a basketball game.

The 189 combined points shatters the previous state record for most points in a game of 153 set in 2021. Hobbton has been involved in the what are now the top three highest scoring games in the NCHSAA. Hobbton lost to Midway 80-73 on Aug. 23, 2021 and then beat Trask 90-62 on Aug. 27 of that same year. The next game on the list is DH Conley beating Aycock 83-68 in 2016.

Pender led 40-29 after the first quarter on Friday, 54-49 at halftime and 70-63 through three quarters. Ironically, the contest was halted with 1:21 left because the stadium lights went out.

“I’m pretty tired,” Pender coach Tom Evans told the Wilmington Star-News after the game. “It was a heck of a ball game. I don’t know if we could tackle anybody.”

Jassiah Hill rushed for six touchdowns for Pender, which got all of its scores from the ground game according to the box score posted at MaxPreps.com. Teammate Jeremiah Johnson added five touchdown runs. Demari Morgan found the end zone twice, and Corryon Moore got the scoring started with a first quarter TD. The Patriots went 11-of-14 on two-point conversions.

Cole Weeks threw six touchdown passes for Hobbton, including four to Ashawd Wynn. Garret Britt caught the other two. Daniel Aguilar found the end zone four times on rushing plays.

Pender is not the first North Carolina team to reach 100 points in a game. Windsor holds the state record for most points by a single team, recording 142 points in a shutout of Creswell in 1930. Cardinal Gibbons beat the Eastern School for the Deaf 100-42 in 1995.

Pender (4-3, 1-2), located in Burgaw in the eastern part of the state, competes in the 1A/2A Waccamaw Conference. The Patriots scored 88 points in their opener in August, beating Lejeune 88-34. Pender also gave up 56 to Wallace-Rose Hill and 65 to East Bladen in earlier losses. The defense shut out East Columbus 36-0 on Sept. 18.

Hobbton (3-4, 0-1) from Newton Grove competes in the Carolina 1A Conference. The Wildcats scored 64 in a win over Spring Creek and lost a shootout to Rosewood 59-42 on Sept. 29.

According to MaxPreps.com, the highest score posted by one team in a game came in 1927 when Haven (Kansas) beat Sylvia 256-0.

Davidson Day beat Harrells Christian Academy 104-80 in a battle of North Carolina private schools in 2012, the highest scoring game nationally that year. Meadville (Pa.) beat DuBois (Pa.) 107-90 in 2015.

The most recent 11-man high school football team to break the 100-point mark in scoring, according to luckyshow.org, was Freedom High in Woodbridge, Virginia, which beat Charles J. Colgan 112-16 on Oct. 7, 2022.
