Preseason Watch List: Chowan QB Rashad McKee

JUCO transfer helped the Hawks reach CIAA title game a year ago

Measurables: 6-2, 210 pounds

Hometown: Huber Heights, OH

Notes: Took over the starting quarterback job in October and led the Hawks to a CIAA Northern Division championship and the school’s first appearance in the league title game …

Was named his team’s MVP in the CIAA championship contest, played in Salem, Va. Chowan fell just short of the crown, 31-28, with Fayetteville State kicking a field goal for the win on the final play. McKee did his part, compiling 266 passing yards and rushing for a touchdown …

Threw for 195 yards and two scores in a pivotal CIAA upset of Virginia Union in late October. The Hawks and Virginia Union each finished with an overall conference record of 7-1, and Chowan advanced based on the head-to-head tie-breaker.

Collected his second CIAA Player of the Week award in November after accounting for five touchdowns in a 54-8 rout of Elizabeth City State. He was 15-of-19 passing for 172 yards and three touchdowns, while rushing for 89 yards and two scores in the contest. McKee had the Hawks’ first five touchdowns, helping build a 34-0 lead …

Threw for 404 yards and five touchdowns in a JUCO game for Dodge City in October 2021. Rushed for 99 yards a score in that same contest.

One of only a handful of returning starters, as Chowan lost its head coach, a number of staff and several players to UNC Pembroke in the off-season.

Chowan will shift conferences this season, moving out of the CIAA and into the Gulf South for the next two years as it prepares for a permanent home in Conference Carolinas, which is bringing back football. McKee and the Hawks begin 2023 on Thursday, Aug. 31 at Barton.
