Providence Day School in Charlotte has been a private schools football powerhouse for several years.

In addition to winning a lot of games – including NCISAA state championships in 2021, 2022 and 2023 – the Chargers also have become a pipeline to college football programs at all levels. Providence Day’s most recent senior class, for example, featured players who signed with Tennessee (David Sanders), Wake Forest (Braxton Winston) and Wisconsin (Cairo Skanes).

Now, it’s time for the next group of Charger standouts to step into the recruiting spotlight. Here are current headlines involving rising seniors and juniors from Providence Day:

Quarterback Zaid Lott changes commitment

Rising senior signal caller Zaid Lott decommitted from North Carolina earlier this week and shortly thereafter pledged for ACC rival Syracuse.

Considered a three-star prospect by 247Sports Composite, Lott had been committed to UNC since June 2024.

“After much reflection, I have decided to forgo my commitment to the University of North Carolina,” Lott wrote in a post on X on March 25. “This choice was tough, but I believe it’s the best step for my future. I’m grateful for the support and understanding from everyone involved. I’m excited for what comes next.”

About 30 minutes later, Lott announced his commitment to Syracuse: “I am forever grateful to finally say that I am officially HOME!!!!!!”

Lott (6-4, 205 pounds) completed 184 of 316 passes for 2,869 yards and 29 touchdowns in 2024, helping Providence Day to a runner-up finish in the NCISAA. Lott had just six interceptions.

In the NCISAA title game against Rabun Gap in mid-November, Lott threw for 329 yards and four TDs. Lott also rushed for 285 yards and seven TDs a year ago.

Wide receiver Gordon Sellars nearing decision

Four-star wide receiver Gordan Sellars posted on X that he will make his college commitment official on April 18. On3 Recruits noted that Sellars, a rising senior, is down to six schools: Ohio State, Clemson, South Carolina, Michigan, Georgia and North Carolina A&T. Sellars also posted on X this past weekend that he, too, has been offered by Syracuse.

Sellars (6-2, 180) caught 50 passes for 975 yards and 10 touchdowns in 2024. On3 lists Sellars at 184th in its latest national On300 list of top 2026 recruits.

OL Leo Delaney visits multiple ACC programs

Offensive lineman Leo Delaney, a MaxPreps 2024 All-American, has an offer sheet nearly three dozen schools deep. The 6-6, 280-pound, four-star prospect is listed as “warm” toward Tennessee, Michigan and Clemson by 247Sports. He visited Clemson earlier this month and again this week, and has two visits planned to Michigan. He also visited UNC and NC State last week and has caught the attention of Wisconsin coaches.

Delaney is considered a four-star interior lineman. Like Sellars, he ranks in On3’s top 300 at 257th.

Rising senior class stocked with D1 talent

Miles Funderburk and Quinton McCray give Providence Day yet more FBS/FCS quality players from its 2026 class.

Funderburk(6-0, 270) is a defensive tackle with offers from Charlotte and Campbell, according to 247Sports. McCray (6-0, 210) plays linebacker and running back for the Chargers. He made 122 tackles with 14 tackles-for-loss last season. McCray lists offers from Charlotte and Miami (Ohio).

2027 Chargers already on recruiting radars

Defensive back Robert Geathers III, a rising junior, recently reported an offer from Duke. He also holds offers from schools like Virginia Tech, Syracuse, UCF, Southern Cal and Wisconsin. Geathers had 94 tackles, five QB hurries, five pass breakups and an interception as a sophomore in 2024.

Chargers defensive end/tight end Griff Galloway, also a rising junior, recently received an offer from Notre Dame. He holds offers from 10+ FBS programs, including North Carolina and Duke, as well as Florida, Georgia, Penn State, South Carolina, Tennessee and Texas A&M.

Safety Brennan Drummond and athlete Caleb Cooper also will be players to watch from Providence Day’s Class of 2027.

Drummond has been a starter at Providence Day for two seasons already. He already has 193 tackles and four interceptions. He reports offers from Arkansas, Florida, Syracuse, Virginia Tech, Miami (OH) and Campbell.

Cooper (6-0, 207) has been offered by Kentucky, Louisville, Nebraska, Purdue and Southern Miss. Cooper made 63 tackles and compiled 363 all-purpose yards for the Chargers last season.

Providence Day’s 2025 schedule kicks off Aug. 22 against visiting Roman Catholic from Philadelphia. The ‘25 slate also includes games against 4A runner-up Rolesville, Charlotte Catholic and Butler. The state title rematch against Rabun Gap will be Sept. 19 at home. See the Chargers’ full schedule here.
