Scoreboard: High school football season off and running

State champion Providence Day rolls; four NC teams pitch shutouts

We’re still one week away from the start of the high school football season for a bulk of North Carolina’s teams.

But a select group of schools kicked things off Friday around the Old North State.

Multiple Charlotte area schools got off to winning starts. Providence Day, the reigning state champions from the NCISAA Division I, cruised to a 55-8 win over Trinity Christian from Fayetteville. Charlotte Latin won at Ravenscroft 52-20. Charlotte Country Day edged visiting Savannah Country Day from Georgia 22-21.

Pungo Christian Academy from Belhaven (59-0), Lawrence Academy from Merry Hill (50-0), Hickory Grove Christian from Charlotte (35-0) and Asheville Christian (31-0) pitched shutouts in their games.
