An experienced high school coach with CIAA pedigree has joined the Shaw football staff.
The Bears announced this week that Elijah Sessoms will be the new wide receivers coach. Sessoms comes to Shaw after two stints as an assistant at Southern Durham and one year as head coach (2022) at J.F. Webb High in Oxford.
“His experience and passion for the game will be invaluable,” Shaw head coach Adrian Jones said. “Elijah has a proven track record of developing talent. We are confident that he will make an immediate impact on our program.”
Sessoms played wide receiver at Fayetteville State between 2007-11. The Broncos won the CIAA crown in 2009. In 2013, he suited up for Winston-Salem State and that year, he says, whet his appetite for coaching.
Sessoms coached for six seasons at Southern Durham, five of them as wide receivers coach. Last season, he was associate head coach, passing game coordinator and quarterbacks coach for the Spartans.
Southern Durham produced one all-state receiver during Sessoms’ tenure there, as well as 10 all-conference receivers/tight ends, according to a Shaw press release.
Shaw has already started fall camp. The Bears open the season with a home game on Saturday, Aug. 31 against visiting Elizabeth City State.
