Speedy West Forsyth DB Justin Ferguson picks Mercer

Class of 2025 standout has six career interceptions

Justin Ferguson

West Forsyth defensive back Justin Ferguson turned heads earlier this summer, running some of the fastest 40-yard dash times at camps hosted by Liberty and Mercer.

Ferguson decided over the weekend to take his speed and talents to Mercer University. He announced his commitment on social media.

The Bears, located in Macon, Ga., compete in the FCS Southern Conference. They are coached by Mike Jacobs, who took the job in the off-season after leading Lenoir-Rhyne from Hickory to the Division II semifinals.

Ferguson (6-0, 175) plays both cornerback and safety for West Forsyth. He has been a starter since his sophomore year and has six career interceptions. His junior highlight reel showcases his closing speed and features multiple pass breakups and stops, including a blocked PAT.

Ferguson posted on X that he ran the 40-yard dash in 4.37 seconds at Liberty in June and 4.47 seconds at Mercer.

Ferguson also held offers from Gardner-Webb, North Carolina A&T and Charleston Southern. He’s had interest from a host of in-state programs: Appalachian State, East Carolina, Campbell, North Carolina Central, Western Carolina, Lenoir-Rhyne, Fayetteville State. Out-of-state programs showing interest included South Florida, Liberty, Chattanooga, Wofford, Delaware, Howard, Alabama State, James Madison and Old Dominion.

Ferguson and West Forsyth will open the season Aug. 23 at A.C. Reynolds. The home opener for the Titans, who advanced to the second round of the 4A playoffs last season, comes the following Friday against Oak Grove.
