LAURINBURG – Blake Birchler threw three first-half touchdown passes, and Webber International spoiled St. Andrews football season opener Saturday afternoon.
Webber led 35-7 at halftime and rolled to a 49-14 victory in the only “Week 0” college football game involving a North Carolina school.
Redshirt-freshman quarterback Jalen Dodd and freshman running back Nahjiir Seagraves scored the St. Andrews’ touchdowns, one coming in each half.
Dodd’s TD came in the second quarter on a 1-yard run, capping a 12-play, 75-yard drive. Seagraves found the end zone from 3 yards out in the fourth period.
Junior receiver Aronson Cook had a big game receiving for the Knights, making eight catches for 106 yards. Freshman linebacker Tierell Milligan paced the defense with five tackles, two tackles-for-loss and a forced fumble.
Things don’t get easier for St. Andrews from here. Lindsey Wilson (10-1 a year ago) visits next week. Then, SAU goes on the road for four straight, including games at Bethel (11-1) on Sept. 9 and at FCS Davidson on Sept. 23.
