St. Augustine’s fires head football coach Howard Feggins after six games

Defensive coordinator Jody Owens has been named interim coach

For the second time this calendar year, St. Augustine’s has fired its head football coach.

The Falcons announced Friday that “effectively immediately, Howard Feggins has been released” as its head coach.

The official release did not state a reason for the firing, but CBS-17 reported earlier in the day that Feggins was fired for playing an ineligible player for three snaps in a game against Virginia State on Sept. 16.

The school named defensive coordinator Jody Owens as the interim head coach. Owens is in his first year with the program. Owens has been an assistant with the Carolina Panthers and a co-defensive coordinator at Pittsburgh State, according to a St. Aug’s release.

St. Augustine’s is 0-6 this season. The Falcons, who lost their most recent game 7-0 to Fayetteville State last Saturday, will visit Johnson C. Smith tomorrow, Oct. 14. SAU has been outscored 177-33 thus far.

St. Aug’s released David Bowser as head coach in January following a two-year stint with the program. Bowser won just two of 17 games.
