The Down East Viking Football Classic has been played nearly every year since 1998. Elizabeth City State and Fayetteville State faced off in the inaugural game, with the Broncos prevailing 10-7.

Fayetteville State last played in the event in 2021, beating the Vikings 47-6 in front of 6,300 fans. Elizabeth City State shut out St. Augustine’s in last year’s Classic, 13-0.

“We are extremely excited to return for another Down East Classic, and we are so thankful for the support from the city of Rocky Mount and the leadership,” ECSU athletics director James Dubose said in a press conference Tuesday. “This really serves as an opportunity for two great CIAA institutions to bring HBCU football to a wonderful location and to be able to showcase all of the great things about both of our universities.”
