Ty Woods hit four field goals – including the game-winner with nine seconds left – helping UNC Pembroke football win the Two Rivers Classic over Fayetteville State 19-17 on Friday.
Fayetteville State football had taken a 17-16 lead with 4:15 left in the game after a 95-yard kickoff return for a touchdown from Elliott Barry.
UNC Pembroke quarterback Caleb Pierce completed key passes to Trey Dixon, Malik Tobias and Diaz Alexander to move the Braves from their 33 to the FSU 13 with less than a minute to play. Woods, a freshman from Kannapolis, split the uprights from 24 yards out to give new coach Mark Hall a win in his UNCP debut.
After losing the Two Rivers Classic for the first time last season – also by two points – UNC Pembroke improved to 9-1 all-time in the series.
Woods played high school football at A.L. Brown. He averaged 45.4 yards per punt as a prep senior and made 35 of 37 PATs, earning second-team 4A all-state.
