What a rush! Guilford College improves to 3-0

Quakers pile up 397 yards on the ground to beat Sewanee on homecoming

Guilford's Malik Woodard, shown here against Greensboro, rushed for two touchdowns in Saturday's win over Sewanee.

Guilford College relied on stout defense to win its first two games but unleashed a freight-train rushing attack to collect victory number three on Saturday.

The Quakers amassed 397 yards on the ground — the second-best performance by a college team from North Carolina this season — and rallied past Sewanee 44-35 on Homecoming. Guilford has not won three games in a season since 2018. It’s the first time the Quakers have been 3-0 to start a season since 2016. Guilford scored just 14 points in each of its first two games against Greensboro and Methodist.

Malik Woodard rushed for 167 yards and two scores to lead the offensive onslaught. Evan Sullivan added another 118 yards, while Josh Campbell scored once and put 74 more yards in the rushing column.

Guilford is only the second team from North Carolina this season to have two 100-yard backs in the same game. Davidson’s Mari Adams and Mason Sheron were the first dynamic duo to both crack 100 yards in week two.

After Sewanee opened with two quick touchdowns, Guilford responded with a 70-yard bomb from quarterback Caleb Robles to wide receiver Tegan Griggs. Robles contributed both through the air and on the ground, throwing for 130 yards and two touchdowns, and rushing for another score.

Guilford’s defense, led by Jaylan Richardson’s six tackles, tightened up after a shaky start, limiting Sewanee’s offense down the stretch. Eli Davis made a key interception that helped shift momentum in the second quarter.

Guilford will take this weekend off from game action. Old Dominion Athletic Conference play begins on Oct. 5 when the Quakers travel to Hampden-Sydney (2-1). The following weekend will bring another road trip, this time to No. 22 Randolph-Macon (2-1).

The next home game for Guilford will be nearly a month from now when Washington & Lee visits Oct. 19.
