Brooks Bentley, the starting quarterback for Wingate’s run to the South Atlantic Conference championship this season, plans to enter the transfer portal.
The sophomore from Venice, Fla. (Venice HS) made the announcement on social media Monday evening. He went 16-3 in two seasons as the Bulldogs starter. This season, he earned a spot on the South Atlantic Conference’s All-Piedmont team. Last season, he was the league’s Freshman of the Year. He will have three seasons of eligibility remaining.
Bentley completed 139 of 246 passes for 1,852 yards and 14 touchdowns this season, against only six interceptions. Bentley threw three touchdown passes against both Newberry and Limestone. He went 23-of-28 against division rival Lenoir-Rhyne for 248 yards and one score.
In 2023, Bentley completed 126-of-191 passes for 1,834 yards, 13 scores and four interceptions.
“I would like to thank the Wingate coaching staff for investing in me,” Bentley posted on Twitter/X on Monday evening. “Thank you, Coach (Joe) Reich and Coach (Rashaan) Jordan, for believing in me and giving me the opportunity to play college football. I will never take for granted the opportunity you all gave me here.
“I want to thank my teammates for making these past two years better than I could have ever imagined – 2024 SAC Champs. You all pushed me every day to become a better version of myself. I am so grateful for the memories and friendships made here that will last forever. Thank you to my family for always supporting me and always being in my corner. I want to thank Jesus for putting me here and guiding me in each step of the way.
“Wingate will forever hold a special place in my heart.”
Bentley becomes the second pivotal player from Wingate’s offense to announce plans to transfer. Erwin Anthony, who won the SAC’s Blocking Trophy, posted last week that he intends to enter the portal.
