8:58 PM – That’s a wrap for Week 8 of the college football season in our state. It’s been fun trying to keep up with 25 college football games in an eight and a half hour period. Check NC Football News through the rest of the weekend for recaps and more analysis from all of the action!

<<FINAL>> Newberry 27, Catawba 21. This has been a heartbreaking season in many ways for the Indians. Catawba lost its fourth one-score game. Newberry scored twice in the fourth quarter, including a TD in the final minute, to erase a 21-13 Catawba advantage.

8:11 PM – Catawba takes the lead! A Juice Martin pick-six puts the Indians in the fourth quarter. Catawba 14, Newberry 13.

<<FINAL>> Louisburg 50, Palmetto Collegiate 9. Hurricanes improve to 6-2 in junior college action.

8:03 PM – One quarter to go in our final game of the night. Newberry at the Catawba 19 with 15 minutes to play. Wolves 13, Indians 7.

7:55 PM – He’s at it again! Catawba’s LJ Turner springs loose for 75 yards and a touchdown. The Indians get on the board with 2:07 left in the third period. Newberry 13, Catawba 7.

<<FINAL>> Southern Virginia 21, Methodist 17. Southern Virginia earned its first win of the season at the expense of the Monarchs (1-6). Methodist led 17-7 at the half but couldn’t find the scoreboard after the break.

7:30 PM – Our last game of the day isn’t going North Carolina’s way right now. Catawba has fallen behind Newberry 13-0 in D2 action in the third quarter. Can the Indians borrow a few yards/points from Western Carolina, Davidson, Gardner-Webb?

<<FINAL>> LaGrange 26, Brevard 21. Tornados suffer first conference loss. Ethan Beamish throws 2 TD passes, including one with 1:07 left. But Brevard can’t get the ball back.

<<FINAL>> William & Mary 35, Campbell 28. Camels fall to 2-5 on the season

<<FINAL>> Winston-Salem State 31, Livingstone 17. The Rams improve to 6-2 and stay in the CIAA title game conversation. Daylin Lee and Trevon Hester rush for touchdowns and Dante Bowlding returned an interception for a score.

<<FINAL>> NC State 24, California 23. Wolfpack stuffs final Bears drive, including a sack, to hold on for a cross-country victory. Hollywood Smothers had a 100-yard rushing day for the Pack.

<<FINAL>> Navy 51, Charlotte 17. Max Brown throws two TD passes for the 49ers but also 3 INTs in his first game back from injury.

6:57 PM – NC State goes 3-and-out. Punt. Cal gets it back at own 34 with 1:09 to go. NCSU 24, Cal 23.

<<FINAL>>Washington & Lee 40, Guilford 23. Quakers drop third straight after 3-0 start. Caleb Robles throws for 235 and 2 TDs.

6:55 PM – Winston-Salem State getting closer to sixth win, up on Livingstone 24-10 late in third quarter.

6:53 PM – COLLEGE KICKER SITUATION! True freshman kicker for Cal shanks short-yardage FG to the right. NC State holding on to 24-23 lead with 1:34 left! Cal still has three timeouts.

<<FINAL>> Elon 30, Albany 14. This is more of what we expected from the Phoenix coming into the season. Chandler Brayboy returned TWO kicks for touchdowns, and Elon beat a team that made the FCS quarterfinals a year ago. TJ Thomas rushed for 138 yards and a TD.

6:45 PM – Is it over yet? Alas, not for Charlotte. The 49ers getting rolled by Navy 51-17 with the clocking under five minutes to play. Charlotte staring at 3-4 record and first conference loss. Navy will improve to 6-0.

6:43 PM – Cal in the NC State red zone at the two-minute warning. Wolfpack still leads 24-23. Cal has a freshman kicker.

6:34 PM – Hollywood Smothers races for a 41-yard touchdown, and the Wolfpack takes the lead! NCSU 24, Cal 23. Midway through the 4Q

6:28 PM – KC Concepcion has been an all-purpose threat for NC State today at Cal. He’s caught passes, rushed for a score and threw a pass. NC State trails 23-17 with 8:35 left. Wolfpack with the ball and driving

6:03 PM – The final game of the day is kicking off, Newberry at Catawba.

6:02 PM – Guilford College hanging in their with Washington & Lee in D3 action. After not scoring the past two games, the Quakers trail 20-16 in the third quarter.

5:52 PM – Finally, we’re having a day worthy of the preseason hype for our state’s FCS teams. Campbell has pulled even with William & Mary 21-21. Elon beating up on Albany 30-14. Both games in the third quarter. Davidson, Western Carolina, Gardner-Webb already have high-scoring wins in their pockets.

<<FINAL>> Lenoir-Rhyne 20, Barton 0. Tough times for the Bulldogs, shut out again in conference action. The Bears, meanwhile, still in the hunt to defend their conference championship.

<<FINAL>> Western Carolina 52, Furman 20. Remember when we were worried about the Catamounts after a surprising loss to Campbell? WCU seems to have found its stride, winning for the third time in a row and improving to 3-0 in the SoCon. These stats are RIDICULOUS: 801 total yards, 620 passing yards (Cole Gonzales). Mercy.

<<FINAL>> Mars Hill 30, Tusculum 3. Quarterback JR Martin powers the Lions to a big conference win, accounting for 280+ yards and three TDs. Mars Hill improves to 2-3, 2-2 SAC Mountain.

5:26 PM – Halftime Update: Navy 38, Charlotte 10. The last time Navy and Army were this good was in 1945, which also was a great year for our service academies.

5:22 PM – VJ Wilkins’ second TD catch of the day pulls Campbell within a touchdown at halftime at William & Mary. W&M 21, Camels 14

5:16 PM – CRAZY STAT ALERT! Western Carolina’s Cole Gonzales has thrown for 620 yards (!!) and 5 TDs, and it’s still not over at Furman. WCU 45, Furman 20 | 4Q 2:57 … FYI, the NCAA FCS record: Taylor Heinicke of Old Dominion threw for 730 yards against New Hampshire on September 22, 2012.

5:07 PM – Halftime alert. Cal 13, NC State 10.

<<FINAL>> Gardner-Webb 42, Lindenwood 35. The Bulldogs weather a fourth-quarter rally and collect their first Big South/OVC victory. GWU now 2-5 overall. Happy homecoming!

5:00 PM – MILESTONE ALERT! Elon WR Chandler Brayboy caught a 13-yard pass in the second quarter at Albany, giving him 2,000+ receiving yards for his career. Brayboy is the sixth player in program history to reach that milestone. Even better, the Phoenix are ahead: Elon 17, Albany 7.

<<FINAL>> Hampton 59, NC A&T 17. Aggies fans don’t suffer well losing in football. It will be interesting to see how the fanbase responds to this resounding defeat on homecoming. A&T was outscored 59-3 after notching two early TDs.

4:48 PM – Mars Hill QB JR Martin now has three touchdown runs, and the Lions are taking care of business against winless Tusculum 30-3. Tusculum played in the SAC championship game last season. Mars Hill trying to get there this fall.

4:44 PM – KC Concepcion scores on a wildcat play, and NC State takes its first lead at Cal. Wolfpack 10, Bears 7 | 3:20 2Q

4:42 PM – Gilberto Lorenzana hits a field goal for Winston-Salem State, giving the Rams a 10-7 lead over Livingstone in the second quarter. Both teams have great FG kickers – these points are crucial.

<<FINAL>> Davidson 70, Stetson 48. The Wildcats become the first North Carolina college team to reach 70 points this season. The Wildcats piled up more than 400 yards rushing and 660+ in total yards. 4:33 PM – Earlier this week we asked if ECU and/or Charlotte could put a dent in unbeaten seasons for Army and Navy. Well, the Pirates laid an egg earlier today, losing to Army 45-28 in a game that wasn’t that close. Charlotte trails Navy 24-0 after the first quarter. Sigh…

4:25 PM – Gardner-Webb’s Tyler Riddell playing with precision: 15-of-19 passing for 182 yards and four TD passes. GWU 42, Lindenwood 28 | 4Q 14:52

4:23 PM – Chandler Brayboy has a kick return for a touchdown, and Elon leads Albany 14-7 in CAA action. Matthew Downing also has a TD throw for the Phoenix.

4:15 PM – This is not a basketball score. Davidson leads Stetson 70-42 with less than three minutes to play. Wildcats have more than 400 yards rushing. This is one of the most fun teams to watch when things get rolling.

<<FINAL>> Virginia State 36, Elizabeth City State 7. Vikings still looking for their first CIAA win, falls to 0-4 in the league, 2-5 overall.

<<FINAL>> West Florida 35, Chowan 6. Matthew Conord boots a pair of field goals but those are the only points the Hawks can muster against a stellar Gulf South Conference foe.

4:06 PM – Hampton putting a hurtin’ on NC A&T on homecoming in Greensboro. Two fourth-quarter touchdowns push the Pirates ahead 45-17. Once-proud Aggies staring at 1-6 and a possible winless campaign in the CAA.

4:03 PM – Our last CIAA game of the day just kicked off in Salisbury. A pair of 5-2 teams ready to duke it out: Winston-Salem State at Livingstone.

<<FINAL>> Johnson C. Smith 21, Shaw 14. The Golden Bulls — the top team in our latest Fabulous 15 statewide rankings — won for the seventh time this season and for the ninth consecutive time in a regular season game. JCSU stuffs a fourth-and-1 in the final minute to seal it. Check back later today for a full recap.

3:55 PM – Go West, Young Pack. NC State gives up early touchdown in Berkley. Cal 7, NC State 0 | 6:56 1Q

3:45 PM – It’s not over yet! Shaw gets a defensive stop and gets the ball back with 1:43 left! Then Christian Peters hits Ah’shaan Belcher for a 27-yard gain to near midfield. JCSU 21, Shaw 14.

3:40 PM – Cole Gonzales is slinging it! The Western Carolina quarterback has 353 yards and two touchdown passes — at halftime. WCU 17, Furman 6.

3:28 PM – Johnson C. Smith may have just put a dagger in the Shaw Bears’ upset hopes. Darius Ocean hits Brevin Caldwell for a 12-yard TD with 4:20 to play. JCSU 21, Shaw 7.

3:20 PM – Halftime in Boiling Springs:Gardner-Webb 28, Lindenwood 14. Tyler Riddell has thrown three TD passes, two to Jordan Bly

3:18 PM – Shaw drives to Johnson C. Smith 5-yard line looking to tie the game. But Golden Bulls block a field goal attempt to snuff out the drive. Johnson C. Smith 14, Shaw 7 | 8:44 4Q

<<FINAL>> Wingate 38, Limestone 12: Despite giving up points for the first time since September, the Bulldogs earn a big South Atlantic Conference triumph. Limestone had been 4-0 in league play. We’ll recap this one more in-depth later today!

<<FINAL>> Fairmont State 37, UNC Pembroke 28: Braves battled back after falling behind 34-14 in the third quarter, but Fairmont State picked off a Colin Johnson pass with 2:42 to play and the score 34-28. UNCP drops to 2-5 overall, 2-3 in the Mountain East.

2:56 PM – Under 5 minutes to go, UNC Pembroke has battled back but still trails Fairmont State 34-28. QB Colin Johnson has 262 yards and 3 TDs

2:52 PM – Elizabeth City State struggling against Virginia State. VSU up 20-0, holding Vikings to minus-44 yards rushing.

2:46 PM – Brett McMurphy just posted on X about Charlotte DB Ja’Qurious Conley: The UNC transfer who sat out the first 6 games has been cleared to play.

2:26 PM – We’re at halftime in Charlotte. Surprise, surprise. Johnson C. Smith 7, Shaw 7.

2:21 PM – Uh-oh. The early magic has faded for North Carolina A&T. Hampton scores 17 unanswered. Dorrian Moutrie TD grab puts Pirates up 17-14 in the 2Q at GHOE.

2:15 PM – Well, it was bound to happen. Limestone finally cracks Wingate’s end zone on a 74-yard Dustin Noller pass to DJ Black — the first time a team has done that in 10-plus quarters. Bulldogs still way ahead with 3:28 left in the 3Q. Wingate 31, Limestone 6

2:05 PM – We can’t watch anymore. Army takes second-half kickoff, punches in another touchdown. Army 31, ECU 0 | 9:12 3Q

2:01 PM – Gardner-Webb and Lindenwood trade touchdowns, start 2Q tied 7-7. Anthony Lowe hauls in GWU’s score from Tyler Riddell.

1:52 PM – Davidson has three rushing touchdowns and 120 yards on the ground after one quarter, taking an early 21-7 lead over Stetson. Mari Adams, Mason Sheron and Luke Durkin each have found the end zone for the ‘Cats.

1:48 PM – Shaw defense comes up with a big third-down stop. Johnson C. Smith misfires on 32-yard FG. Still 7-7 midway through 2Q.

1:45 PM – West Florida leads Chowan after one quarter: 14-3.

1:40 PM – Greatest Homecoming On Earth off to a great start for North Carolina A&T. Two quick touchdowns give Aggies a 14-0 lead over visiting Hampton.

1:35 PM – Johnson C. Smith answers Shaw touchdown. Darius Ocean completes a 23-yard TD pass to Blake McCullough. It’s 7-7 on homecoming day in Charlotte.

1:32 PM – FAST FACT: Wingate has not surrendered a point since losing in overtime to Carson-Newman on Sept. 21. The Bulldogs’ scoreless streak is now at 10 full quarters. Wingate 17, Limestone 0 at the half.
