A handful of North Carolina college football teams have reached the club house and several more will join them after this weekend’s set of games.

Yes, folks, the 2025 college season is winding down for many schools across the Old North State. Last weekend marked the end of the line for D2 teams like Elizabeth City State, Winston-Salem State, Livingstone and Shaw, as well as our lone junior college program, Louisburg.

This week will bring an end to the D3 season for Brevard, Greensboro, Methodist and North Carolina Wesleyan (Guilford canceled its last game). Most of the rest of the D2 teams will join them in turning in equipment until 2026.

Enjoy the football while it lasts because we’ll be back in off-season protocols before you know it.

But have no fear, Week 12 (Nov. 14-15) will be chock full of marquee matchups to savor:

  • North Carolina Central gets us started with a Friday night home game against defending MEAC champ South Carolina State. The 5:30 p.m. kickoff is a little strange, but at least it will be the only college game on national TV for a few hours
  • Johnson C. Smith and UNC Pembroke will play in D2 conference championship games, with the Golden Bulls aiming to win the CIAA for the first time since 1969 and the Braves trying to claim the first Conference Carolinas football title since the 1970s. Read more →
  • The ACC race heats up – and we get another round of “Big Four” showdowns – with NC State going to Miami, Duke hosting Virginia and Wake Forest entertaining UNC
  • Western Carolina will try to bounce back from last week’s heartbreak against Mercer, hosting East Tennessee State in the Blue Ridge Border Battle.
  • Appalachian State and East Carolina take aim at top teams in their respective conferences, James Madison and Memphis
  • Seven total in-state matchups ramp up the rivalry juices from the FBS level to D2 and D3.

BEST OF THE BEST: Check out our North Carolina college football players of the week for Nov. 6-8 games.
