The first October weekend of the North Carolina college football season saw NCAA records fall (helmet sticker to you, Taron Dickens), multiple game-winning kicks (Gardner-Webb, Western Carolina) and UNC’s Kenan Stadium emptying out before halftime.
App State rocked The Rock with a late defensive stand. Duke won an ACC After Dark game at Cal (final whistle after 2 a.m.), while D2 programs UNC Pembroke, Catawba and Johnson C. Smith each improved to 5-1 – the best overall records of any team in our state.
The leaves are changing, the temps are dropping and we’re gearing up for the stretch run of the 2025 season (though it still feels like we just got started).
Week 7 is here, and that’s essentially the halfway point for our Division I schools – and on the downhill for those competing in the D2 and D3 ranks.
Week 7 brings season-defining matchups, upset alerts, and a fresh look at the Playoff picture.

Some highlights of this week’s schedule of games involving North Carolina college football teams (full schedule below):
- UNC and Duke are on bye weeks, but the other five FBS teams will be leaving the state.
- ECU plays another midweek game, traveling to Tulane on Thursday night – with huge American Conference implications for both
- NC State travels to Notre Dame as a three-touchdown underdog, though TV coverage will be limited to Peacock subscribers only. Yuck.
- North Carolina Central and North Carolina A&T each will face former MEAC rivals
- Taron Dickens and the surging WCU Catamounts host the other shade of SoCon purple, the Furman Paladins
- Elon, receiving votes in this week’s FCS national rankings, entertains Top-25 Villanova
- Catawba puts a four-game win streak on the line against defending SAC champ (but suddenly slumping) Wingate.
- UNC Pembroke will celebrate homecoming against Shorter aiming to build on the state’s longest win streak of five.
- All five D3 schools – Brevard, Greensboro, Guilford, Methodist and North Carolina Wesleyan – will host games, in contrast to last weekend when all went on the road.
