β North Carolina FCS Wrap-Up
Overall it was a rough day for North Carolina’s FCS contingent as our teams posted a collective 1-4 record. Here are takeaways:
π Biggest Win of the Day
Well, there was only one win today from a North Carolina FCS team: Western Carolina’s 45-38 triumph at The Citadel. And it was big. The Catamounts won for the fifth time in a row, drawing even with Mercer at 4-0 in the Southern Conference standings.
The Catamounts trailed much of the first half, 7-0, 14-7 and 17-14. Markel Townsend’s 7-yard touchdown run with 1:56 left in the opening half gave WCU the lead for keeps (21-17). Western Carolina stretched its advantage to 14 points on multiple occasions before The Citadel scored late for the final margin.
WCU heads into a bye week to close out the month, then it’s a four-game race for the SoCon title. The Catamounts play at Chattanooga on Nov. 1, then host Mercer the following week.
πͺ Standout Performance
We’re starting to sound like a broken record, but WCU quarterback Taron Dickens belongs in this spot again. Dickens completed 28-of-33 passes for 369 yards and five touchdowns. Malik Knight and James Tyre proved Dickens favorite targets. Both enjoyed 100+ yard receiving days.
β‘ Biggest Upset
We’re pretty upset here at NC Football News headquarters. We like Saturdays the way we had it last week when Western Carolina, NCCU, Campbell and Gardner-Webb rolled up big wins. It’s tough when most of our teams take Ls like this week.
Elon got off to another solid start at William & Mary. But for the second week in a row, a double-digit first-half lead evaporated. The Tribe scored 23 unanswered points to pull away and held off a late Phoenix rally. Otherwise Elon would have been in this spot.
π₯ Other Highlights & Takeaways
Elon’s Kahmari Brown has emerged as one of the top defensive linemen in the state. Brown made 13 tackles, had three sacks and recorded 3.5 tackles-for-loss. Two of the sacks came late when Elon needed to get the ball back. Per Elon sports information, Brown now ranks top-10 all-time at Elon in sacks (10.5) and single-season sacks (6.0).
Brown’s teammate Brodie Carroll added 13 tackles to the ledger Saturday. He now has 66 stops on the season, tops for Elon.
New Hampshire scored 15 unanswered points in the fourth quarter to pull away from Campbell. The Camels took a 10-9 lead midway through the third period when JJ Cowan scored on a 9-yard run.
The normal starting quarterbacks for both Campbell (Kamden Sixkiller) and Gardner-Webb (Nate Hampton) did not play Saturday. Chris Lofton had 130 receiving yards for GWU, which started Cole Pennington.
It’s tough to watch Davidson‘s free fall after so many successful seasons under coach Scott Abell. The Wildcats dropped to 1-6 overall and 0-3 in the Pioneer Football League with Saturday’s 45-0 shutout at Drake. The ‘Cats never had a losing season under Abell and won the league twice using his unique shotgun triple option offense. Mason Sheron and Mari Adams, who each came into the season with 2,000+ career rushing yards, have combined for just 489 yards and four TDs.
