Week 6 of the North Carolina FCS college football season will be mostly a road show for teams from the Old North State.
Only Gardner-Webb will play in its own stadium, hosting Charleston Southern in the newly minted “Clash of the Carolinas” BBQ Bowl. The winner gets ‘cue bragging rights and a sweet trophy (FYI: vinegar and tomatoes > mustard in our book!).
Campbell, meanwhile, won’t have to travel far but faces a stiff challenge at NC State. Western Carolina looks for its third-straight win at Wofford. Davidson opens Pioneer Football League play at Stetson, while CAA teams Elon (at Towson) and North Carolina A&T (at William & Mary) head north for league games. NCCU is idle.

✅ FCS Football Wrap-Up
It was a day of nailbiters for North Carolina FCS college football teams. WCU and Gardner-Webb won on late field goals. North Carolina A&T suffered a heartbreaking loss when its last drive stalled out at the William & Mary 3. Here are parting thoughts on Week 6:
🏆 Biggest Win of the Day
Elon, Western Carolina and Gardner-Webb each picked up much-needed conference wins today. We’ll give the “Biggest Win” honors to GWU, which also got to keep a trophy as a reward for its 30-27 thriller against Charleston Southern. Both teams scored 20 points in a wild fourth quarter. Charlie Viorel won it for the Runnin’ Bulldogs with a 48-yard field goal as time expired.
The two teams have been playing for North Carolina/South Carolina BBQ Bowl bragging rights the past few years. Everyone knows North Carolina barbecue is superior to South Carolina’s. So it’s fitting that Gardner-Webb proved it on the field as well. All vinegar and tomatoes, no mustard!
💪 Standout Performance
Well, well, well… Western Carolina QB Taron Dickens is back in this spotlight once again. Dickens completed his first 46(!!) passes and finished 53-of-56 for 378 yards and 3 TDs in the Catamounts’ 23-21 win at Wofford. His first incompletion came early in the fourth quarter, and Wofford blocked a field goal attempt on the next play.
The Catamounts got the ball back, and Dickens drove them into position for Marcus Trout to hit the game-winning 34-yard field goal with 23 seconds to go. After WCU (3-3, 2-0) forced a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, Dickens got to kneel down on the final snap of an important SoCon win.

⚡ Biggest Upset
We were prepared to drop North Carolina A&T into this slot during much of the afternoon. But William & Mary scored 17 unanswered points and made a late stand near the goal line to steal the victory, 38-34. The Aggies moved to the William & Mary 3 late in the fourth quarter but couldn’t convert on fourth time. Kevin White threw for 225 yards and a TD for A&T. Wesley Graves had two rushing scores.
🔥 Other Highlights & Takeaways
- Tony Trisciani became Elon’s winningest coach in the school’s Division I era after the Phoenix topped Towson 17-3. The Phoenix had a time-of-possession advantage of nearly 12 minutes. Dan Frederick and TJ Thomas Jr. rushed for TDs. Trisciani now has 36 wins at Elon.
- Stetson ended a 13-game Pioneer Football League losing streak against Davidson. The Wildcats got two TD throws from Coulter Cleland-to-Ivan Hoyt but only managed 131 yards on the ground. Mason Sheron rushed for one score and 61 yards.
- Campbell generated early highlights against NC State. The Camels recovered a muffed punt deep in Wolfpack territory in the first quarter and paid off the takeaway with a 13-yard Kamden Sixkiller-to-Mike-Chandler-II touchdown pass. Alex Crabb also had a 46-yard field goal.
With the win over Towson, Head Coach Tony Trisciani becomes our winningest coach in the Division I era!
