After more than a decade, the Soup Bowl Trophy is back on Greensboro College’s campus. The Pride snapped an eight-game losing streak to city rival Guilford, grinding out a 21-7 victory Saturday night in the 24th Annual Gate City Soup Bowl at Appenzeller Field.
The night began with fireworks: Greensboro’s Sincere McIntyre returned the opening kickoff 95 yards for a touchdown. Guilford (0-1) answered with an eight-yard touchdown run from Caleb Robles later in the first quarter, but the Quakers’ offense never found a steady rhythm again.
The defensive slugfest saw more combined punting yards (326) than rushing (172) or passing (262). The Pride (1-0) made the most of their limited opportunities. Quarterback Josh Sims delivered two clutch touchdown passes, an eight-yard strike to Karee Dykes in the third quarter and an 11-yarder to Matt Kidd with just over two minutes left to seal it.
Greensboro’s defense was relentless, forcing three turnovers and sacking Guilford quarterbacks five times. Jay Law snagged two interceptions, while Frank Walker led with eight tackles, including 2.5 for loss. Guilford linebacker Travis Burton was a force with 3.5 sacks, but the Quakers couldn’t capitalize offensively despite outgaining the Pride 225-209.
The win was Greensboro’s first Soup Bowl triumph since 2012 (the teams did not play from 2017-2020). Off the field, the night also delivered a victory for the community, with more than 11,000 canned goods and non-perishables collected in the annual food drive tied to the event.
Greensboro will look to build on the momentum next Saturday, playing its first home game against visiting Roanoke (1-0). Guilford regroups for a trip to Methodist next Saturday.
Kentucky Christian 41, Brevard 20
Brevard’s home and season opener started with promise, as quarterback Ethan Beamish fired three first-half touchdown passes to stake the Tornados to a 20-0 lead. But it unraveled quickly. Kentucky Christian’s Jackson Wasik matched Beamish with three scoring passes after halftime, rushed for 96 yards and another TD, and led the Knights to 41 unanswered points and the victory.
Freshman Zion Fauntleroy-McDaniel added 48 rushing yards and his first collegiate TD catch for Brevard, while defensive back DJ Stevenson debuted with nine tackles. Preseason D3 All-American Robert Dorsey chipped in eight stops and a sack. The Tornados were outgained 346-166 and will look to regroup next week at Sewanee.
Shenandoah 25, Methodist 6
Methodist’s defense kept the Hornets out of the end zone early with back-to-back goal line stands, but Shenandoah eventually pulled away in Winchester, Va. The Hornets scored through the air on an 87-yard strike in the third quarter and sealed it with a long touchdown run late.
Transfer quarterback Ty Little threw for 211 yards and a late touchdown to Colin Fay, while senior linebacker Omar Goodwin anchored the Monarch defense with a career-high 14 tackles and a sack. Methodist hosts Guilford in its home opener next Saturday.
North Carolina Wesleyan 64, Averett 12 (Thursday)
The Battling Bishops scored on the first play from scrimmage – a 75-yard Javier Rice-to-Michael Pannell pass play – and never looked back. NCWU built a 43-6 lead by halftime. 🏈 Read more in our Game Recap from Thursday
