Carolina Panthers franchise history

The Carolina Panthers officially joined the NFL in 1993, when league owners awarded Charlotte an expansion franchise.

The Panthers began play in 1995 alongside the Jacksonville Jaguars and quickly became one of the most successful expansion teams in modern NFL history. Carolina went 7-9 in its first season, then reached the NFC Championship Game in 1996.

As of spring 2026, the franchise has won six division titles and two NFC championships, reaching the Super Bowl after the 2003 and 2015 seasons.

The Panthers’ first Super Bowl run came under coach John Fox and quarterback Jake Delhomme, when the “Cardiac Cats” reached Super Bowl XXXVIII against New England. Carolina returned to the Super Bowl after a 15-1 regular season in 2015, led by NFL MVP Cam Newton and one of the best teams in franchise history.

The Panthers have also been shaped by some of the most important football figures in the Carolinas, including Sam Mills, Steve Smith, Julius Peppers, Cam Newton, Christian McCaffrey and Luke Kuechly. Kuechly’s induction into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in August 2026 adds another major milestone to the franchise’s story.
