WCU Football History At A Glance
Western Carolina football has been a steady presence in the mountains of North Carolina since 1931, building a program defined by resilience and flashes of high-level success.
Over the decades, Western Carolina has navigated multiple classifications — from Division II to Division I-A and eventually to FCS — while maintaining a strong regional identity rooted in Cullowhee.
The high-water mark for Western Carolina came during the 1983 season. Led by head coach Bob Waters, the Catamounts captured national attention with three postseason wins — including road upsets over Holy Cross and Furman — to reach the NCAA Division I-AA national championship game. That team finished 11-3-1, the best record in school history, before falling to Southern Illinois in the title game.
Earlier success also came in 1949, when Western Carolina won its first conference championship and earned a postseason bowl appearance, and in 1974, when the Catamounts reached the Division II playoffs.
While postseason appearances have been limited, Western Carolina’s history is marked by competitive teams, notable upsets and a continued push to reestablish itself among the Southern Conference contenders. Under current head coach Kerwin Bell, the Catamounts are working to build on that legacy, aiming to return to the playoff stage and add new chapters to a program that has shown it can compete on the national level.
