Providence Day RB Ian Cline commits to Army West Point

Rising senior will join one of the most storied rivalries in college football

Ian Cline, an all-state running back for private schools state champion Providence Day School, is already using the hashtags:

#GoArmy #BeatNavy.

After fielding multiple offers over the winter, spring and summer, Cline announced on Aug. 8 that he has committed to play football at Army West Point in 2025. He attended Army’s spring game in April, shortly after being offered by the Black Knights.

“I am very thankful to be in this position,” Cline posted on X. “What an amazing opportunity!!”



Here are five things to know about Cline (5-9, 215), who has been named a captain for Providence Day for this upcoming season. The Chargers went 12-1 a year ago, winning the N.C. Independent Schools Athletic Association championship over Rabun Gap-Nacoochee (GA) 34-27 — their third state title in a row.

1. Cline averaged better than a first down every time he touched the ball. He played in 13 games for Providence Day, finishing with 129 carries for 1,355 yards (10.5 ypc average) and 23 touchdowns. His longest run covered 86 yards. Cline also caught 15 passes for another 191 yards and a score.

2. Held a key role on the Chargers’ defense as well. Playing linebacker, he tallied 31 solo tackles and 26 assists (4.4 hits per game).

3. Moved to Charlotte from Lewisburg, WV before the 2023 season. He played his freshman and sophomore years at Greenbrier East High in West Virginia, recording 2,932 rushing yards and 39 touchdowns.

4. Reported offers from multiple North Carolina schools including Charlotte, Campbell, Elon and Davidson. Marshall, Liberty, Navy, Richmond, Princeton and Eastern Kentucky offered from out-of-state.

5. Appeared in 24 games as an outfielder for Providence Day baseball. He hit .242 with nine RBI and 15 runs scored.
